Chapter 8 - The Road to Recovery
Six months passed.
The trial of Victor Vance and his associates had been the biggest news story the state had seen in decades. Armed with the digital ledger and the testimony of Thomas Vance, the prosecution built an airtight case. Victor and Marcus were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring they would never be able to threaten anyone again.
But for the Vance family, the real battle was fought in the quiet rooms of a specialized rehabilitation clinic in the countryside.
Elena Vance had finally awoken from her coma. The recovery was slow, requiring intensive physical therapy to regain her speech and motor skills, but her spirit remained unbroken. Thomas, having been fully cleared of any criminal intent due to the extreme duress and coercion he faced, spent every day by her side.
Sofia sat on the wooden porch of their temporary cottage at the clinic, drawing a picture of a large, friendly stone giant with a bright yellow sun shining overhead.
Morales walked up the steps, carrying a box of pastries. He had become a frequent visitor, a trusted guardian angel who had transitioned from a rescuing officer to a beloved family friend.
"That's a beautiful drawing, Sofia," Morales said, sitting down on the bench next to her.
"I'm drawing him as a protector," Sofia said proudly, pointing at the giant. "Like you."
Morales smiled, a genuine, warm expression that erased the years of stress on his face. "Your dad tells me the doctors say your mom is going to be able to go home for good next month."
"Really?" Sofia’s face lit up, her eyes sparkling with a joy that had been absent for far too long.

"Really," Thomas said, stepping out onto the porch. He looked healthier, his skin regained its color, and the heavy shadow of fear that had haunted him was completely gone. He reached out and shook Morales's hand. "We owe you everything, Marcus. If you hadn't listened to Sofia that night... if you hadn't believed her..."
"I was just doing my job, Thomas," Morales said. "But it was Sofia who saved you both. She was the brave one."
