Chapter 7 - The Trial of Strength

Morales blocked Victor’s downward strike, grabbing his wrist. The two men wrestled for control of the blade, their breathing ragged, boots scraping against the concrete floor. Despite his refined appearance, Victor was strong, fueled by the desperation of a man watching his empire crumble.
"You're making a mistake, cop," Victor hissed, pressing the knife closer to Morales’s throat. "I own this town. You kill me, or arrest me, and you'll never survive the week."
"I'll take my chances," Morales grunted.
With a burst of adrenaline, Morales threw his weight forward, slamming Victor against the wooden support beam of the shed. The structure groaned, and a shower of dust and debris fell upon them. Morales managed to disarm Victor, sending the knife clattering into a deep drainage grate. He followed up with a hard right hook that sent Victor sprawling into the dirt, unconscious.
Outside, the gunfire ceased. Morales rushed to the doorway, his gun drawn, only to see Miller standing over Marcus, who was on his knees with his hands behind his head.
"All clear out here!" Miller called out, breathing heavily. "The backup we called is arriving now."
In the distance, the sirens of a dozen police cruisers echoed, their blue and red lights painting the gravel walls of the quarry in a vibrant, chaotic mosaic.
Morales ran back inside the shed and scooped Sofia into his arms. She clung to him, sobbing uncontrollably into his shoulder. "You're safe, Sofia. It's over. I promise you, it's completely over."
As the backup officers flooded the quarry, securing Victor and Marcus in handcuffs, Morales carried Sofia out into the cool night air.
"Officer..." Sofia whispered, her voice tiny. "I know where the stick is. Daddy told me if anyone ever tried to hurt us, I should look inside the giant's heart."
Morales looked up at "The Colossus," the towering concrete structure. At its center was a rusted, heart-shaped iron hatch used to clear blockages in the old days.

With the help of a technician from the forensics unit, they opened the hatch. Taped securely to the inside wall of the iron "heart" was a small, waterproof container. Inside was the silver flash drive containing the complete, unedited digital ledger of Apex Holdings.
It was the smoking gun. Victor Vance’s empire was officially dead.
