Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

Vance’s arrest sent shockwaves through Moretti Group, but the removal of a corrupt CFO was only the beginning. The audit initiated by Dominic and supported by my detailed historical logs revealed a deeper network of compliance failures that had plagued the company since Antonio's death.

For the next month, I worked side by side with Dominic in the executive suite. What started as an effort to reclaim my rightful place turned into a powerful professional alliance. My eight years on the lower floors gave me an intimate understanding of the operational day-to-day that no executive on the 40th floor possessed. I knew where the inefficiencies were, where staff was being mistreated, and how to fix the broken channels.

Dominic was a revelation as well. Behind the intimidating reputation carried by his family name was a leader determined to legitimize every corner of his father's empire, stripping away the old-world criminality to build a clean, transparent corporate future.

"You're remarkably good at this," Dominic noted late one evening as we reviewed logistics reports over takeaway coffee.

"I had eight years to watch how things were managed," I replied with a faint smile. "You learn a lot when people assume you aren't paying attention."

He looked at me with deep respect. "My father wanted to protect you, Anna. But he underestimated you. You didn't need protection—you just needed the truth."

Our late-night strategy sessions gradually shifted from strictly professional planning to personal understanding. Dominic learned about my struggles as a single mother raising Lily after my husband passed away, and I learned about the heavy burden he carried trying to steer his family out of the dark shadows of their past.
