Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Boardroom

The next morning, Dominic did not return to his top-floor executive suite. Instead, he summoned me and Lily to a secure private office in Lower Manhattan. For the first time in eight years, I wasn't viewing the Moretti organization from the bottom of an organizational chart; I was sitting across from its head as an equal partner.

Dominic laid out the financial audit Marco had pulled overnight. Julian Vance had been systematically siphoning funds through offshore shell entities for over five years, capitalizing on the transition period following Antonio’s death. The unpaid letters in my shoebox were detailed warnings I had sent to Antonio years ago, flagging phantom shipping manifests that Vance was using to disguise his embezzlement.

"Vance realized that if you remained an employee, the upcoming annual shareholder review would automatically trigger a mandatory disclosure of your equity trust," Dominic explained, his voice low and measured. "He needed you gone, your access revoked, and your records archived before the end of the quarter."

"Why didn't your father tell you about the trust?" I asked softly.

Dominic’s expression softened with a tinge of regret. "My father was paranoid near the end, Anna. He didn't know who to trust inside the board. He hid your father's legacy in plain sight, keeping you in an entry-level position to keep you off everyone's radar until I was firmly in control. But he died before he could hand me the key."

Lily sat in the corner, drawing pictures with colorful markers, oblivious to the high-stakes corporate warfare being discussed. Dominic glanced at her, a rare, genuine smile breaking his stern demeanor.

"Your daughter saved this company, Anna," Dominic said. "And she saved your father's legacy. Now, it's time we clean house."

Dominic instructed Marco to prepare a formal board meeting for Friday morning. Vance believed his termination order had succeeded and that I was quietly fading away into Brooklyn. He had no idea that the junior clerk he dismissed was about to walk into the boardroom with the Chairman.
