Chapter 9 - Christmas Miracle

Snow began to fall gently over Overland Park as night descended on December 24. The streets were quiet, illuminated by warm glowing lights from neighboring windows and festive holiday decorations.

Inside Corinne’s house, the living room was a sanctuary of warmth and light. A magnificent pine Christmas tree stretched toward the ceiling, adorned with sparkling ornaments, glowing fairy lights, and the handmade paper stars Casey had crafted earlier that afternoon with Aunt Miriam.

The fireplace crackled softly, casting a golden dance of light across the hardwood floor.

Casey sat in her mother’s lap in the oversized armchair by the hearth, wearing her red Christmas pajamas—the very same pajamas she had worn while standing barefoot in the cold rain two nights ago.

"Mommy, is Santa still coming tonight?" Casey asked sleepily, her eyelids growing heavy as the warmth of the fire lulled her.

"He knows exactly where to find us this year, sweetheart," Corinne whispered softly, brushing a stray lock of hair away from her daughter’s forehead. "He has our new address, and he knows we're safe at home."

Aunt Miriam sat on the sofa nearby, sipping hot cocoa and smiling as she watched the two of them. "It's the most wonderful Christmas Eve I can remember in a long, long time," Miriam said softly.

Corinne looked around her living room. Every photograph on the shelves was hers. Every memory in the walls was authentic. Every shadow of the past had been swept away by truth, courage, and unconditional love.

She tightened her arms around Casey, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of her daughter’s heart against her chest—a living, breathing reminder of why she had fought so hard to return.

"Merry Christmas, my baby," Corinne whispered, kissing the top of Casey’s head as the little girl drifted peacefully off to sleep.

"Merry Christmas, Mommy," Casey murmured back in her dreams.
