Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

By the morning of December 23, the legal battle had shifted from a quiet ambush to a full-scale rout.

Sitting at Miriam’s kitchen table, Corinne worked alongside Marcus Vance, who had driven all the way from Washington overnight to personally deliver the certified forensic report of the hacked files and fabricated text messages.

"The digital signature on those fake texts leads directly to an IP address registered under Gwendolyn’s maiden name," Marcus explained, pointing to a highlighted section of the legal brief. "Furthermore, we found bank transfers from Ross’s personal account to a private investigator in Kansas City who was hired to dig up dirt and manufacture those edited video clips."

Corinne looked over the documents, her expression grim. "Can we attach this to an emergency motion for sole custody and a restraining order?"

"It’s already filed," Marcus smiled faintly, tapping his tablet. "I have a contact at the Overland Park Circuit Court who fast-tracked it. Judge Harrison is reviewing the package right now. Given the new evidence regarding child endangerment and document falsification, Ross and Gwendolyn are looking at serious criminal charges, not just a civil divorce."

Just then, Corinne’s phone rang. It was an unfamiliar local number.

She swiped to answer and put it on speaker so Marcus and Miriam could hear.

"Mrs. Hardy?" a stern, professional voice asked.

"This is Corinne Hardy."

"This is Detective Miller with the Overland Park Police Department. We received the supplementary evidence package submitted by your legal counsel this morning. We’ve also executed a search warrant on your primary residence based on the prescription and financial fraud affidavits."

Corinne sat up straight. "And?"

"Mr. Ross Hardy and Ms. Gwendolyn Vance have both been detained for questioning regarding forgery, computer tampering, and child endangerment," the detective stated clearly. "An officer is currently stationed at the property to ensure they vacate the premises permanently within the hour. If you wish to return to your home, it is fully secure."

Corinne let out a long, shuddering breath that felt like shedding an eight-month-old armor.

"Thank you, Detective," she said steadily. "We'll be home soon."
