Chapter 6 - The Reckoning in Court

The custody and divorce proceedings took place two months later in a federal courtroom in downtown Phoenix.
Alistair sat at the defense table beside a court-appointed public defender. He could no longer afford the high-priced legal team that had once handled his corporate deals. Across the room sat my mother-in-law, Sharon, and his sister, Piper. Both were dressed plainly, their previous smugness completely erased.
The legal battle was brief but decisive.
My father’s legal team presented a mountain of evidence. Bank statements showing Alistair’s systematic financial abuse of our household, records of unauthorized corporate transfers, and testimonies from former employees detailing his abusive management style.
Then came the turning point of the trial.
The judge, Honorable Judge Catherine Reyes, looked down from her bench with a stern expression.
"Before I rule on the permanent protective orders and child custody," Judge Reyes said, her voice echoing in the quiet courtroom, "the court will review the medical and photographic evidence taken on the afternoon of July 12th."
High-resolution photographs were projected onto the large screens mounted in the courtroom.
They showed the distinct, angry red-and-purple handprint bruised onto seven-year-old Nolan's small cheek.
The entire courtroom went dead silent. Even Alistair’s public defender lowered his head, unable to offer a defense against the physical proof of cruelty.
Judge Reyes looked directly at Alistair. Her eyes were sharp with utter disgust.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Reyes said slowly. "You claim in your filings that you were merely exercising reasonable parental discipline. Is that correct?"
Alistair cleared his throat, trying to regain a shred of his old composure. "Your Honor... a father has a right to teach his son respect. He was demanding things we couldn't afford—"
"Silence," Judge Reyes cut him off coldly. "The court has reviewed your financial records from that very same day. On the morning of your son's birthday, you confiscated thirty-five dollars saved by your wife for a birthday cake. Less than twenty-four hours later, you spent six hundred dollars on an electronic tablet for your nephew."
Sharon attempted to stand up from the gallery. "Your Honor, my son is a good man! He was just teaching the boy—"
"Sit down, ma'am, or you will be removed by the bailiff for contempt!" Judge Reyes snapped.
Sharon immediately sank back into her seat, terrified.
Judge Reyes turned her attention back to the final ruling. "This court finds a clear, undeniable pattern of physical, emotional, and financial abuse. Therefore, the court orders as follows:"
"First, Nicole Vance is granted absolute sole legal and physical custody of Nolan Vance. Alistair Vance is granted zero visitation rights until he completes two years of court-mandated anger management and psychological evaluation, after which any request for contact will be subject to strict judicial review."
"Second, all remaining assets from Apex Construction, including real estate holdings, liquidated equipment, and properties acquired during the marriage, are awarded entirely to Nicole Vance as part of the divorce settlement and restitution."
"Third, a permanent, lifetime restraining order is issued against Alistair Vance, Sharon Vance, and Piper Vance, prohibiting them from coming within one thousand yards of Nicole Vance or Nolan Vance."
Alistair sat frozen in his chair as the judge brought her gavel down with a sharp, final strike.

"Court is adjourned."
As the room began to clear, Alistair slumped forward, his face buried in his hands. He had lost his company, his home, his wealth, his reputation, and his family. The prophecy my father had spoken in the hallway of our home had been fulfilled completely: he had nothing left to call his own.
