Chapter 4 - A Safe Haven

My father drove us away from Phoenix, heading north toward the mountain country outside Prescott, Arizona, where he owned a vast, peaceful ranch nestled against the pines.

For the first time in seven years, the constant weight of fear in my chest began to lift. In Alistair’s house, every step had felt like walking on eggshells. A dropped fork, a forgotten chore, or a child’s simple request could trigger a wave of verbal abuse or explosive anger. Now, the quiet hum of the truck’s engine was the only sound surrounding us.

Nolan sat in the back seat, staring out the window at the passing mountains. He was still quiet, holding his little birthday candle in his hand, spinning it repeatedly.

"Dad," I said softly, sitting in the front passenger seat. "I didn't know... I had no idea about Sterling Holdings. I thought Alistair was running a successful business."

My father kept his eyes on the road, his hands firm on the steering wheel. "He was running a business on my money, Nicole. Five years ago, when you were pregnant, he came to me in secret. He was facing bankruptcy and jail time for mismanaging client funds. He begged me to save him so you wouldn't suffer."

"And you helped him?"

"I helped him on one condition," Thomas said, his voice tightening slightly. "That he take care of you and Nolan. I put strict legal covenants into the financial agreement. If he ever mistreated my daughter, or if his character proved corrupt, I reserved the right to pull all capital and assume total ownership of every asset tied to the loan."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I wanted to give him a chance to be a good husband and father. I hoped having success would make him a better man. But power didn't make him a better man, Nicole. It just revealed the monster he was hiding."

When we arrived at the ranch, the sight took my breath away. The main house was a beautiful timber-and-stone lodge surrounded by pine trees, with horses grazing in the distant pastures.

My father’s housekeeper, Maria—a kind, warm woman who had known me since I was a little girl—was waiting on the porch with a broad smile.

"Nicole! Little Nolan!" Maria called out, rushing down the steps to wrap us in a warm embrace. "Welcome home! I have made fresh chicken soup and fresh bread for you."

Nolan flinched slightly when Maria hugged him, still cautious around adults. But Maria’s gentle warmth quickly eased his guard. She looked at the faint purple bruise on his cheek, her eyes filling with tears, but she didn't say a word to make him feel uncomfortable.

"Come inside, sweetheart," Maria said softly to Nolan. "I have a big glass of chocolate milk waiting for you in the kitchen."

Nolan looked up at me, seeking permission. I smiled and nodded. "Go ahead, honey."

As Nolan walked inside with Maria, my father stood beside me on the porch, watching the sun begin to set behind the mountains.

"What happens now, Dad?" I asked quietly.

"Now, the legal process begins," Thomas said firmly. "My lawyers filed for emergency sole custody and a temporary restraining order against Alistair this afternoon. Tomorrow, your divorce papers will be served."

"He won't give up easily," I said, a lingering shiver of dread running through me. "Alistair loves his pride more than anything. He won't let people think he lost to us."

"Alistair doesn't have a choice anymore," my father replied, turning to look me straight in the eye. "He spent seven years making you feel weak, Nicole. But starting today, you are going to see how weak he truly is when he has to face the world alone."
