Chapter 5 - The Desperate Strike

Two weeks passed. Life at the ranch was a peaceful sanctuary, but the storm in Phoenix was far from over.
Without my father’s financial backing, Apex Construction completely dissolved within ten days. The bank liquidated the company’s equipment, the luxury residential property was put up for auction, and Alistair’s personal accounts were frozen by federal auditors investigating tax evasion.
Deprived of his fortune, his status, and his power, Alistair grew desperate.
One Tuesday morning, while my father was in town meeting with the legal team, a car pulled up to the gate of the ranch. Through the security camera feed in the kitchen, I saw a battered, rented sedan.
Alistair got out of the car. He looked unrecognizable. The sharp designer suits were gone, replaced by a rumpled, unwashed shirt and jeans. His hair was messy, and his face was unshaven.
He approached the intercom speaker at the gate and pressed the button repeatedly.
"Nicole! Nicole, open the gate!" his voice crackled through the speaker, laced with unhinged rage. "I know you're in there! Stop hiding behind your old man!"
Nolan, who was drawing at the kitchen table, dropped his crayons and froze, his face draining of color. I immediately walked over, wrapped my arms around him, and ushered him into the back bedroom with Maria.
"Stay here with Maria, sweetie. Lock the door from the inside," I told him gently.
I walked back to the kitchen, took a deep breath, and pressed the intercom button. "Alistair, leave immediately. There is a restraining order against you. If you don't leave, the sheriff will be here in five minutes."
"I don't care about a damn restraining order!" Alistair screamed into the speaker. "You destroyed my life! You and your father set me up! You stole my company, my house, my money!"
"You destroyed yourself, Alistair," I replied, my voice steady and cold. "You hit our son. You treated us like garbage. You stole his birthday money to fuel your own arrogance. You brought this on yourself."
"He's MY son!" Alistair roared, banging his fist against the iron gate. "I have a right to see him! If you don't open this gate right now, I'm going to the media! I'm going to tell everyone how Thomas Vance ruined a young businessman and stole his child!"
"Go ahead," a deep voice boomed from behind Alistair’s car.
Alistair turned around rapidly. A local sheriff's patrol car had pulled up directly behind his vehicle, blocking him in. My father stepped out of the passenger side, alongside Sheriff Miller, a tall, stern man who had known my father for twenty years.
"Alistair Vance," Sheriff Miller said calmly, walking forward with his hands resting on his utility belt. "You are currently violating a court-issued order of protection. Step away from the gate and put your hands behind your back."
"This is a setup!" Alistair yelled, backing away like a frantic animal. "He's using his influence to destroy me! Tell him to give me back my money!"
"You don't have any money, Alistair," my father said, stepping toward him with cool indifference. "And you never had character. You were given every chance in the world, and you chose to be a tyrant to a helpless child."
Sheriff Miller didn't waste time arguing. He grabbed Alistair’s arm, twisted it behind his back, and snapped the handcuffs onto his wrists.

Alistair struggled, shouting curses and threats as he was forced into the back of the police cruiser. "You'll pay for this, Thomas! Nicole, you'll regret this! You're nothing without me! NOTHING!"
I stood on the porch, watching the police car drive away down the dusty road, taking Alistair with it. For the first time in my life, I didn't feel a single trace of fear or regret. I only felt an overwhelming sense of relief.
