Chapter 9 - Redemption and Reckoning

For ten agonizing seconds, the only sound in the sub-basement vault was the relentless ticking of the digital timer: 03:12... 03:11... 03:10...
Maris looked down at the heavy brass remote in her hand, then up at Victor’s outstretched palm. The iron-willed matriarch, who had ruled Silverspring’s high society with an iron fist for decades, suddenly looked like a very old, very tired, broken woman.
With a low, ragged sigh that sounded like the collapse of a dam, Maris let the remote slip from her fingers. It clattered harmlessly onto the concrete floor.
Victor lunged forward instantly, punching the master disarm code into the central wall panel. The glowing red numbers flickered, turned a steady, calming green, and the countdown stopped at 01:42.
Maris collapsed onto her knees, burying her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with heavy, wracking sobs.
Victor didn’t celebrate. He didn’t gloat. He simply stood there, watching the woman who had given him life, feeling the heavy, complicated burden of the past finally lift from his shoulders.
A moment later, heavy footsteps echoed down the staircase as the tactical police officers rushed into the vault, guns drawn, ready for a firefight. When they saw the disarmed timer and Maris kneeling on the floor, they lowered their weapons in astonishment.
“Secure her,” Victor instructed the lead officer quietly, his voice steady. “Get medical evaluation for her, and make sure she is transferred to a secure private facility under court observation.”

“Yes, Mr. Williams,” the officer nodded, signaling two patrolmen to assist Maris to her feet.
As they led her away toward the elevator, Maris didn’t look back. Her head was bowed, her spirit entirely broken. The reign of terror over the Williams family was officially over.
