Chapter 7 - The Final Gamble

The rain began to lash violently against the large glass windows of the hospital, turning the night sky outside into a swirling vortex of slate gray and neon lights. Inside Room 412, the atmosphere was finally calm. Catherine had fallen back into a natural, peaceful sleep, her breathing steady and deep for the first time in three years. Annie was curled up in a comfortable armchair in the corner, wrapped in Victor’s expensive cashmere coat, fast asleep.
Victor sat vigil beside the bed, his fingers intertwined with Catherine’s hand.
Suddenly, his cell phone buzzed violently on the bedside table. Fearing an emergency at the hospital or the corporation, Victor snatched it up instantly and pressed it to his ear.
“Mr. Williams?” It was Benson, the corporate legal counsel. His voice was frantic, laced with panic.
“Benson, what is it? I’m busy,” Victor whispered harshly so as not to wake the room.
“Sir, you need to get down to the Grand Estate immediately. Or turn on the national news channel. Your mother... she hasn’t just given up.”
Victor frowned, standing up quietly and stepping out into the hallway, pulling the door shut behind him. “What are you talking about, Benson? What has she done now?”
“She barricaded herself inside the main vault of the Grand Estate,” Benson said breathlessly. “She has live-streamed a press conference to every major financial media outlet in the country. She’s claiming that you orchestrated a hostile corporate takeover, falsified forensic audits, and framed your own mother to seize absolute control of Williams Development. She’s threatening to detonate the old estate’s demolition charges—she managed to bypass the security system to access the structural wiring.”
Victor’s blood ran cold. The Grand Estate was a historic mansion built over a century ago, equipped with an old bomb shelter and structural demolition safeguards meant for a bygone era. If Maris triggered those charges, the entire historic landmark—and anyone inside it—would be reduced to rubble.
“Is she alone in there?” Victor demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.
“No, sir,” Benson replied, his voice shaking. “She has locked herself in with all the original physical deeds, the core corporate servers, and... and she has grabbed media attention by claiming she is holding the final trust funds for your daughter hostage. She says if you don’t step down as CEO and sign over all your personal assets to her within the hour, she’ll burn the entire legacy to the ground.”
Victor gripped the phone so hard his knuckles turned white. His mother was truly insane, cornered and willing to destroy everything—including herself—rather than admit defeat.
“Keep the police and the bomb squad at the perimeter. Do not let anyone approach the west wing until I get there,” Victor ordered.

He hung up, slipping his phone into his pocket. He glanced back through the small glass window of Room 412. Catherine was sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the fresh nightmare unfolding across the city. Victor knew he had to end this once and for all—not with corporate lawyers or police force, but by confronting the monster who had birthed him, face to face.
Twenty minutes later, his armored SUV roared through the wrought-iron gates of the Grand Estate, splashing through the torrential rain as it pulled up to the grand front entrance.
