Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of a Tyrant

Maris Williams stood in the doorway of Room 412, her chest heaving beneath her expensive navy-blue dress. The illusion of the gracious, untouchable matriarch was completely gone; in its place was a cornered animal desperate to salvage what little control she had left.
“Have you completely lost your mind, Victor?” Maris hissed, keeping her voice low so as not to draw the attention of the nurses at the station outside. “Dragging a child into a hotel ballroom, making a spectacle of yourself, and running off like a lunatic over a common gold-digger?”
Victor stood up slowly from his kneeling position beside the bed. The grief in his eyes was instantly replaced by a dark, terrifying fury—a look he usually reserved for ruthless corporate competitors trying to ruin his real estate ventures. But this time, the target was his own mother.
He took two deliberate steps toward her, his towering frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over the older woman.
“Get out,” Victor said, his voice dangerously quiet.
Maris blinked, taken aback. For the first time in his life, her son was not looking at her with respect or obedience.
“Victor, do not take that tone with me,” Maris tried to recover her authoritative posture, lifting her chin. “I am your mother. I built this family name from nothing. I protected you from this woman who only wanted to sink her claws into our fortune. If I hadn’t intervened three years ago, you would—”
“You protected nothing!” Victor interrupted, his roar shaking the small window panes of the hospital room.
Several monitors beeped anxiously in response to the sudden noise. Annie shrank back toward the bed, burying her face in the blankets to escape the terrifying shouting match.
Victor pointed a trembling, rigid finger directly at Catherine’s motionless body on the bed.
“Look at her, Mother! Look at what your ‘protection’ did! While you were hosting lavish parties, wearing designer gowns, and living in a mansion bought with the very money I earned, my wife was starving herself to feed our daughter! My eight-year-old child was forced to dig through trash cans outside a hotel just to find a piece of stale bread!”
Maris flinched slightly, but her jaw remained stubbornly set. She crossed her arms defensively.
“She chose that life,” Maris snapped back, showing no remorse. “She didn’t fit our world, Victor. She came from nothing. A penniless orphan with no pedigree, no social standing, and no manners. I gave her a generous payout when she left—yes, I forged that letter, and yes, I redirected your monthly deposits into a secure family trust to fund your future developments. It was for the greater good of the Williams empire.”
Victor let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh that held no humor whatsoever.
“The greater good? You stole from my family. You lied to my face every single day for three years. You destroyed an innocent woman's life just to feed your own toxic narcissism and obsession with social status.”
“I am your mother!” Maris shrieked, losing her composure entirely. “Without me, you are nothing! Without my connections, without the foundation I laid, you would still be a nobody in the slums! You owe me everything!”
“I owe you nothing anymore,” Victor said with chilling finality.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out his heavy gold signet ring—the traditional symbol of authority within the Williams family real estate corporation—and ripped it off his finger. He walked over and slammed it down hard on the metal bedside table, right beside Catherine’s pale hand.
“Starting tomorrow morning, you are stripped of every title, every asset, and every board seat you hold in Williams Development. Your corporate credit cards are frozen as of this second. The allowance you draw from my accounts is permanently canceled. You will move out of the Grand Estate by noon tomorrow, or I will have the marshals evict you myself.”
Maris stared at him, her eyes wide with absolute horror. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water.
“You... you wouldn’t dare,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I am the founder! The board will never vote with you against me!”
“Try them,” Victor replied coldly, pulling his smartphone from his pocket. He dialed a quick speed-dial number. “Benson? Prepare an emergency board meeting for 8:00 AM sharp. Draft the resolution for the total removal of Maris Williams from all executive and advisory roles due to financial fraud and abuse of power. Have corporate legal ready to audit all offshore accounts tied to her name.”
He hung up without waiting for a response, sliding the phone back into his pocket.
Maris staggered backward, the color entirely draining from her face. She realized, with a sickening jolt of reality, that her son was completely serious. The empire she had built and manipulated for decades was slipping through her fingers like dry sand.
“You will regret this, Victor,” she hissed venomously, turning on her heel and marching out of the room, her pride shattered beyond repair.
As the heavy door clicked shut behind her, Victor let out a long, shuddering breath. He turned back to the bed, where Annie was watching him with wide, fearful eyes. He knelt down beside his daughter, pulling her into a tight, protective embrace.

“It’s okay, sweetheart,” Victor whispered, kissing the top of her messy ponytail. “Daddy is here now. No one will ever hurt you or your mother ever again.”
Little did Victor know, the financial audit he had just ordered would uncover secrets that went far deeper than just stolen monthly allowances—secrets involving family betrayals that would shake the foundations of Silverspring society to its core.
