Chapter 9 - The Harbor Light

Two years later, the grand opening of the Arthur Whitaker Maritime Center took place at Terminal Nine.
Where rusted steel and rotted piers once stood, a magnificent glass structure now overlooked the sparkling waters of Grayhaven Bay. Surrounding the center was a lush green public park filled with walking trails, playgrounds, and stone benches looking out over the ocean.
Thousands of Grayhaven residents attended the opening ceremony. Port workers in high-visibility vests stood shoulder-to-shoulder with city leaders, celebrating the dawn of a new era for their city.
Claire stood at the podium on the center's outdoor plaza, a microphone in front of her. Beside her stood Ethan, looking proud and striking, holding Titan’s leash.
Claire looked out over the massive crowd. She saw Warren smiling in the front row, wearing a clean suit and holding hands with his wife. She saw young families playing on the grass. She saw a city that had once been defined by fear and corruption now glowing with hope.
"Ten years ago," Claire spoke into the microphone, her voice echoing clearly across the harbor, "I lost my father to the shadows of this very dock. For a long time, I believed that small people—waitresses, dock workers, night-shift laborers—had no power against the darkness of the world."
She paused, taking a deep breath, her eyes finding Ethan’s.
"But I learned that darkness only survives when good people choose to walk away," she continued. "My father didn't walk away. Ethan didn't walk away. And standing here today, I see a city full of people who will never walk away again. This harbor belongs to us now."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, cheers echoing across the water.
After the ceremony, as the sun began to set over the bay, painting the sky in deep shades of gold, crimson, and violet, Ethan took Claire by the hand and led her away from the bustling crowd toward the edge of the newly built stone pier.
The cool evening breeze played with Claire's dress as they stood together, watching the gentle waves lap against the granite embankment. Titan sat beside them, resting his large head on Ethan’s knee.
Ethan pulled a small velvet box from his coat pocket.
Claire’s breath caught in her throat.
Ethan dropped to one knee on the smooth stone pier. He opened the box, revealing a breathtaking ring crafted from white gold, set with a brilliant sea-blue sapphire surrounded by tiny diamonds.
"Claire," Ethan said, his voice full of deep emotion. "Two years ago, I was bleeding to death in a dark alley, abandoned by everyone I knew. You had every reason to walk away, but you chose to save me. You brought light back into my life when I thought there was none left."
He looked up into her eyes, his expression vulnerable and completely earnest.
"I don't want to spend another day of my life without you by my side. Claire Whitaker, will you marry me?"
Claire covered her face with her hands, tears of overwhelming joy spilling over her lashes. She nodded frantically, her voice choked with emotion.

"Yes! Yes, Ethan, of course!"
Ethan smiled brilliantly, standing up and sliding the blue sapphire ring onto her finger. He pulled her into his arms, dipping her slightly as he kissed her passionately under the twilight sky. Titan let out a joyful, booming bark, circling them both on the pier.
