Chapter 5 - The Safehouse in the Hills

The storm gradually receded as the speed launch sliced through the black waters, heading miles away from the industrial docks toward the rugged cliffs of Grayhaven’s northern shore.
They docked at a secluded private cove hidden beneath a sheer granite cliff. High above, nestled among the pine trees, stood an old stone estate—a property purchased by Ethan’s late mother decades ago, entirely omitted from the Caldwell corporate registry.
Ethan helped Claire out of the boat. She was shivering uncontrollably, soaked to the skin and exhausted beyond measure, but her fingers were still locked around her father's ledger.
"It's safe here," Ethan said softly, draping a warm wool blanket over her shoulders as they walked up the winding stone steps toward the house. Titan trotted ahead, his tail giving a low, cautious wag as he sniffed the perimeter.
Inside, the estate was warm and quiet. Ethan lit a fire in the massive stone fireplace, casting a golden glow across the oak-paneled living room. He brought Claire a cup of hot tea and sat down opposite her, taking off his wet jacket.
Claire looked down at the fire, watching the flames dance. "All these years, I thought my life was just bad luck. I thought my dad was careless. I spent ten years blaming him for leaving me alone."
Ethan reached across the small table between them, laying his hand over hers. His palm was warm, rough, and steady. "Your father was a hero, Claire. He stood up to the most dangerous people in this city to protect the truth. He didn't leave you because he was careless. He died protecting you."
Claire looked up, meeting his deep brown eyes. For the first time since this nightmare began, she felt a profound sense of safety. "What do we do now, Ethan? Marcus controls the police, the harbor authority, and half the judges in Grayhaven."
"Marcus controls the city," Ethan corrected gently. "But this ledger contains federal offenses. Smuggling, tax evasion, murder on international waters. He can't buy the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Washington."
Ethan opened his laptop, connecting it to an encrypted satellite network. He spent the next three hours carefully scanning every single page of Arthur Whitaker’s ledger, creating high-resolution digital copies.
As the morning sun began to peek over the horizon, casting pink and gold light through the high windows of the estate, Ethan turned to Claire.
"I have a contact in the United States Attorney’s Office," Ethan said. "Special Prosecutor Vance. She’s been trying to build a RICO case against my uncle for three years, but she lacked physical documentation linking Marcus directly to the smuggling operations. This ledger is the final piece of the puzzle."
"Will she take the case?" Claire asked.
"She will," Ethan said. "But we have to deliver it to her in person at the Federal Courthouse in the capital tonight. And Marcus knows that too."
Ethan’s phone buzzed on the table. It was an encrypted message from an unknown number. He opened it, his expression darkening immediately.
He turned the screen toward Claire.
It was a live video feed of Miller’s Diner. The diner was surrounded by yellow police tape. Inside, police officers were questioning Warren, who was sitting on a curb in handcuffs.
Attached to the video was a short text message from Marcus:
“Bring me the ledger at the Grand Harbor Hotel at 8:00 PM, nephew. Or your little waitress friend will watch her boss spend the rest of his life in prison for Arthur Whitaker’s murder.”
Claire gasped, her hand going to her mouth. "They're framing Warren for my dad's death!"

Ethan closed the phone, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. "Marcus is getting desperate. He’s running out of time."
Claire stood up, determination flushing out her exhaustion. "We aren't giving him the ledger, Ethan. We're going to destroy him."
