Chapter 8 - The Hearing

The courtroom was quiet, save for the shuffling of papers. Richard sat across the aisle, wearing a rented suit and a plastic, forced smile that didn't reach his greedy eyes. His lawyer argued aggressively that biological maternal ties should take precedence over an paternal uncle who had been estranged from the father for years.

When it was Arthur’s turn to speak, he didn't talk about his wealth, his estate, or his influence. He spoke from the heart.

"Your Honor," Arthur said, his voice echoing with profound authority and emotion. "I lost my brother because of pride and distance. I spent years in an empty house, believing that success was measured in bank accounts. But on Christmas night, I found these girls. They weren't asking for money; they were just trying to survive the cold. In the past month, they have taught me what a home truly is. I don't want custody of them to expand my family tree; I want it because I love them, and because I will spend every breath ensuring they never feel invisible again."

The judge then called for a brief recess to speak with Zelda and Cara privately in her chambers.

When the judge asked Zelda who she wanted to live with, the young girl looked her straight in the eye. "When we were freezing, Uncle Arthur carried us into the warmth. He keeps his promises. We want to stay with him."
