Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The next morning, Christmas Day, the girls woke up not to a cold church step, but to a sunlit bedroom filled with plush blankets. For the first time in years, there was no immediate danger.

Arthur had spent the entire night on the phone with his legal team, private investigators, and child welfare officials. Because of his immense influence and the clear biological connection—which he fast-tracked through a private DNA laboratory—he was granted temporary emergency custody. He was determined to make it permanent.

Over a quiet breakfast, Arthur began to piece together their story. "Zelda, can you tell me what happened after your father passed away?"

Zelda swallowed a piece of pancake, looking around the magnificent room before answering. "Mom got sick. Then we lived with Miss Martha. But Miss Martha said the state stopped sending the checks, and she couldn't afford to feed four mouths anymore. So she brought us to the church and told us to wait for the social worker."

Arthur’s chest tightened with a mixture of rage at the system and profound sorrow for what these children had endured. Miss Martha had simply abandoned them on a freezing night because of bureaucracy.

"You don't have to worry about Miss Martha, or checks, or anyone leaving you ever again," Arthur told them, his voice thick with emotion. "This is your home now."

Cara smiled, a genuine, dimpled smile that reached her eyes. "Can we see the tree?"

Arthur smiled back. "We don't have a tree yet, Cara. I usually spend Christmas alone. But I think it's time we changed that."
