Chapter 6 - Into the Depths

The old Apex facility on 4th Street looked like a hollowed-out concrete husk in the driving rain. Broken windows stared down like empty eye sockets, and rusted chain-link fencing surrounded the perimeter. But beneath the decay lay a state-of-the-art underground laboratory powered by silent private generators.
Marcus and his three tactical operatives cut through the side fence in seconds. Nathaniel followed closely, wearing a black tactical jacket over his dress shirt, his eyes sharp and focused. They slipped through a heavy fire exit, descending into the dark concrete staircase that led to the sub-basement levels.
"Motion sensors ahead," Marcus whispered, holding up a hand. "Two private guards at the primary security desk."
"Take them down quietly," Nathaniel ordered.
With practiced precision, Marcus's team breached the sub-basement security door. Before the guards could raise their sidearms, they were overwhelmed and restrained with heavy zip-ties. Nathaniel stepped past them, plugging the silver flash drive Lily had given him into the central terminal desk. The screen flickered to life, requesting a bio-metric and cryptographic key. Clara had programmed the drive with a specific security code — the date of the day she and Nathaniel had first met ten years ago in Boston.
Nathaniel typed in the six digits: 10-14-16.
The system beeped green, and a schematic of the facility illuminated the monitor, showing a locked containment room at the far end of Hallway C. The monitor also displayed a countdown timer: 00:42:15 until automated system purge.
"Vance is planning to burn the server logs and flood the lower chambers with industrial cleaning solvent to destroy evidence," Marcus said, reading the screen. "We have less than forty minutes."
"Move!" Nathaniel commanded, sprinting down Hallway C.
They reached a reinforced steel door with a heavy glass viewing window. Inside, illuminated by harsh fluorescent lighting, sat a woman tied to a chair in front of a bank of medical monitors. Her dark hair was matted, her face pale and exhausted, but her eyes were burning with defiance. Clara.
"Clara!" Nathaniel shouted, pounding his fist against the reinforced glass.
Clara's head snapped up. When she saw Nathaniel standing outside the glass, her eyes widened in utter shock and disbelief. She shook her head frantically, mouthing the words: It's a trap!

Before Nathaniel could react, heavy metal blast doors slammed down at both ends of the hallway, sealing Nathaniel and Marcus inside the narrow corridor. Over the intercom, Julian Vance's smooth, triumphant voice echoed through the cold concrete space.
"Did you really think it would be that easy, Nathaniel?" Vance chuckled over the speaker. "I knew the moment the girl escaped that she would lead you right here. You were always so predictably romantic."
