Chapter 2 - Echoes of a Forgotten Name

The emergency room seemed to contract around them, the background hum of medical monitors and distant sirens fading into a dull roar. Nathaniel stared at the child before him, his pulse hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. In his executive suite at Apex Healthcare Group, he was used to hearing his name spoken with reverence, fear, or corporate calculation. But here, dripping from the lips of an exhausted, shivering girl who had braved a violent deluge, it sounded like an incantation from a past he had buried eight long years ago.
"I'm Nathaniel," he said, his voice softer than he had ever remembered using. He sank lower onto one knee, ignoring the wet linoleum soaking through the fabric of his tailored trousers. "I'm Nathaniel Reyes, sweetheart. What is your name?"
The girl let out a long, trembling exhale, her posture visibly giving way as if the single sentence had consumed the very last reserve of her formidable willpower. "Lily," she whispered. "My name is Lily. And the baby... that's Maya."
Nurse Renata bustled back into the corridor, her forehead creased with professional concern. "Nathaniel, peds has Maya. She's got a high fever, severe bronchial distress, but we've got an IV started and oxygen running. She's going to be okay. But who is this little girl?"
"She's with me," Nathaniel said instinctively, standing up and shedding his expensive wool suit jacket. Without waiting for permission, he wrapped the warm jacket around Lily's trembling shoulders. The coat enveloped her almost entirely, touching the floor, but she pulled it tight around her small frame, breathing in the scent of cedar and expensive cologne.
"Lily," Nathaniel continued, gently taking her wet hand. "You said your mama sent you. Where is she? Why didn't she come with you?"
Lily's dark eyes pooled with sudden, overwhelming grief, though no tears fell. She was a child who had clearly been taught that crying was a luxury she couldn't afford. "Men came to our place tonight," she whispered, leaning closer to him so Renata and the nearby guards couldn't hear. "Bad men in suits. They told Mama that if she didn't sign the paper, they would take Maya away forever. Mama told me to hide under the floorboards with Maya. She gave me her transit card and a folded paper. She told me, 'If anything happens, run to St. Jude ER. Find Nathaniel Reyes. Tell him Julian Vance is coming to take everything.'"
A cold, icy surge raced through Nathaniel's veins. Julian Vance. The name hit him like a physical blow. Vance was the ruthless CEO of Vantage Life Sciences — Nathaniel's fiercest corporate rival, and a man devoid of moral boundaries. But how did Vance connect to this girl? And more importantly, who was Lily's mother?
"Lily," Nathaniel asked, his voice tight, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What is your mother's full name?"

Lily reached into the inner pocket of her oversized hoodie, past the transit card, and pulled out a damp, tightly folded document. Her fingers were stiff from the cold. "Her name is Clara," she said quietly. "Clara Vance."
Nathaniel felt the world tilt beneath his feet. Clara. The woman who had disappeared from his life eight years ago without a trace, taking his heart with her, leaving behind only a brief note that read, 'It's safer if you never look for me.' He had spent two frantic years searching the globe for her before being forced to accept that she had slipped into the shadows forever. And now, standing in a chaotic city hospital at midnight, her daughter was standing in front of him, holding a piece of paper that held the key to an eight-year mystery.
