Chapter 5 - The Secret Laboratory

Lily drew a deep breath, reaching back into her hoodie pocket. She drew out a small silver flash drive attached to a broken key chain. "Mama gave me this, too. She said Vance locked her in the sub-basement of the abandoned bio-tech facility on 4th Street — the old Apex research building Vance bought three years ago. She said he's going to erase all the data at sunrise and make her disappear."

Nathaniel felt a surge of rage. Vance had converted one of Apex's former properties into an illegal offshore research bunker right under the city's nose. That was why Clara couldn't reach him — she was being held captive in a black-site facility designed specifically for secrecy.

Nathaniel pulled out his phone and made a single call to Marcus Thorne, his former security chief and an ex-military operative who managed Apex's high-level risk management team. "Marcus. I need six men, tactical gear, and non-lethal equipment at the old 4th Street facility in twenty minutes. We have a hostage extraction."

"Understood, boss," Marcus's gravelly voice replied without hesitation. "We're on the move."

Nathaniel turned to Renata, who had just walked in with dry clothes for Lily. "Renata, I'm leaving Lily and Maya in your personal care. I trust you with their lives. Keep them safe until I return."

"I've worked this ER for twenty-two years, Nathaniel," Renata said, her jaw set with absolute resolve. "Nobody gets through those doors without going through me and four armed hospital guards. Go get her mother."

Nathaniel looked down at Lily. He gently reached out and touched her cheek, wiping away a stray smudge of rain and dirt. "I'm going to bring your mama home, Lily. Will you wait for me?"

Lily nodded, her small hand reaching out to squeeze his fingers. "Be careful, Daddy," she whispered.

The word hit Nathaniel with the force of a tidal wave — Daddy. It anchored him, wiping away every trace of fear or corporate restraint. He wasn't just a CEO fighting a rival business tycoon anymore; he was a father fighting for his family.

Ten minutes later, Nathaniel was in the passenger seat of an armored black SUV, speeding through the torrential storm toward 4th Street. Beside him, Marcus was checking equipment. "What's the plan, Mr. Reyes?"

"Vance thinks I'm at the hospital cowering behind lawyers," Nathaniel said, staring out at the rain-slicked asphalt. "He thinks I'm going to play by corporate rules. We hit the sub-basement, rescue Clara, and secure the server drive. No mistakes, Marcus. Tonight, Vance loses everything."
