Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

Two weeks passed. The initial shockwave had settled into a steady, crushing weight upon the Sterling family. Charles Sterling had suffered a mild heart attack from the stress and was currently under armed guard at a secure medical facility, facing forty counts of federal bank fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion.

Rowan and Jaxson were denied bail, classified as extreme flight risks and dangers to the community. They were housed in a maximum-security federal holding facility, stripped of their designer clothes, wearing orange jumpsuits that offered no protection from the harsh reality of their new lives.

Marcus sat in a conference room at the federal courthouse, across from Brooke and her mother, Clara, who had long divorced Jaxson but remained trapped in the town due to financial manipulation.

"Thank you, Brooke," Marcus said sincerely, looking at the brave teenager. "What you did saved Lily’s life. If we hadn't gotten that video, they would have successfully buried the evidence."

Brooke wiped a tear from her eye. "Lily didn't deserve that, Uncle Marcus. None of us deserved the way they treated everyone. I just wanted the truth to matter for once."

Amanda Vance entered the room, carrying a thick leather binder. "We have a development. Miranda’s legal defense has completely collapsed. Her lawyers realized that if she goes to trial alongside Rowan and Jaxson, she’s looking at a mandatory minimum of twenty-five years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole. She wants to cut a deal."

Marcus leaned forward, his expression hardening. "What kind of deal?"

"She’s willing to testify against her brothers and her mother. She will provide the exact details of how Evelyn organized the hush money for Sheriff Landry and how Charles used the timber mill to hide the assets used in the cover-up. In exchange, she wants her charges reduced to child neglect and a lighter sentence."

Marcus stood up, walking to the window that looked out over the city. He thought of Lily, who was currently in physical therapy, crying out in pain as she tried to bend her mending fingers. He thought of the cold, calculated movement of Miranda closing that curtain.

"No," Marcus said, turning back to the prosecutor.

Amanda blinked, surprised. "Marcus, her testimony would guarantee an absolute slam-dunk against the parents."

"We already have a slam-dunk," Marcus replied, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "Elijah has the financial data. We have the video. We don't need her bargains. She sat there and watched our daughter get beaten with iron. She doesn't get a backdoor out of this. Tell her she goes to trial with the rest of them. Let the jury see her for exactly what she is."

The rejection of the plea deal sent shockwaves through Miranda's cell. When her attorney delivered the news, she collapsed onto the concrete floor, finally realizing that the Sterling name held absolutely no currency in the world she had entered. The velvet curtains had fallen on her life, and there was no one left to open them.
