Chapter 3 - The First Fracture

At exactly 6:00 AM, the gears of Marcus’s operation began to grind.

The Sterling Timber Mill, the crown jewel of Charles Sterling’s empire, was suddenly flooded not by loggers, but by unmarked black SUVs. Agents from the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), accompanied by investigators from the Environmental Protection Agency and federal labor auditors, swarmed the property.

The mill foreman, a loyal Sterling lackey named Vance Miller, rushed out of his office, screaming, "You can't be here! Charles Sterling has an agreement with the regional director!"

An elite federal lead investigator stepped forward, flashes of badges gleaming in the morning sun. "Your regional director was suspended three hours ago pending a federal bribery investigation. We have a federal warrant signed by a Supreme Court circuit judge. Shut down the machinery. Now."

Within two hours, the mill was locked down. Millions of dollars in daily revenue vanished. Heavy fines were levied on the spot for massive toxic runoff violations that Elijah had uncovered through digitized state records and anonymously flagged to federal watchdogs.

At the same time, Rowan Sterling was driving his luxury pickup truck down Main Street when three vehicles blocked him in. He slammed on the brakes, leaning out the window. "Do you know who I am? Get out of my way!"

Instead of a local deputy who would apologize, two federal marshals stepped out, sidearms holstered but visible.

"Rowan Sterling?" one asked.

"Yeah, what of it?"

"You are under arrest for federal civil rights violations, witness intimidation, and felony assault resulting in grievous bodily harm," the marshal said, pulling open the truck door and dragging Rowan out onto the asphalt.

"Call my dad! Call Sheriff Landry!" Rowan screamed as his face was pressed against the hot hood of his own truck. "Landry! Get over here!"

Sheriff Landry was currently unable to answer any calls. At the county sheriff's department, a convoy of State Police and internal affairs officers had just entered. Landry stood behind his desk, his face pale as his badge was stripped from his chest.

"Thomas Landry," a state captain declared, "you are being detained under administrative suspension pending a grand jury indictment for official misconduct, conspiracy to conceal a felony, and accepting bribes."

Marcus stood across the street from the sheriff’s office, dressed in a sharp civilian suit, his military bearing undeniable. He watched as Landry was led out in handcuffs. There was no joy in Marcus’s eyes, only the cold precision of a mission being executed flawlessly.

The phone in Marcus’s pocket buzzed. It was Donald.

"Marcus, the bank is panicking. Charles Sterling just found out the mill is shut down and his son is in federal custody. He’s trying to move forty million dollars out of Sterling Valley Finance into a Swiss account."

"Let him try," Marcus replied calmly. "Elijah, you ready?"

"Born ready, big bro," Elijah’s voice crackled through the earpiece. "The moment he enters his master password, the logic bomb executes. The funds won't go to Switzerland. They’re going into a federal escrow account frozen by the asset forfeiture unit."

In his opulent office, Charles Sterling stared at his computer screen, his hands shaking as he typed his ultra-secure access codes. He clicked 'Transfer.'

The screen flashed bright red.

ACCESS DENIED. FUNDS FROZEN BY ORDER OF THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT.

Charles gasped, clutching his chest as the phone on his desk rang. It was his wife, Evelyn, her usual aristocratic composure shattered into a million pieces.

"Charles! The FBI is at the house! They have a search warrant for the entire estate! They’re digging up the floorboards in the study! Where are the boys? Where is Rowan?!"

"Rowan’s been arrested," Charles whispered, the realization finally hitting him like a physical blow. The fortress they had spent forty years building wasn't just cracking—it was imploding.
