Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Justice

By noon, the town of Sterling Falls was in a state of absolute shock. The radio station owned by the Sterlings had gone completely silent, replaced by a static hum. The local judges who had long protected the family suddenly found themselves recusing themselves from every case, desperately trying to scrub their names from the Sterlings' financial ledgers.
Marcus returned to the hospital. Lily was awake now, her pale face looking incredibly small amidst the massive white bandages and casts. Dr. Archer was checking her vitals, her expression a mix of sorrow and profound respect for Marcus’s restraint.
"Dad?" Lily whispered, her eyes wide with fear. "Are they coming here?"
Marcus sat beside her, gently kissing her uninjured cheek. "No, baby. They are never coming near you again. The bad men are being taken away."
"What about Mom?" Lily asked, a tear rolling down her cheek. "She looked right at me, Dad. I screamed for her, and she just... she closed the curtain."
Marcus’s jaw tightened, the muscle pulsing. "Your mother has to answer for what she did, Lily. Everyone who hurt you is going to pay. I promise."
Just then, the door to the room opened, and Colonel Mitchell stepped in, accompanied by a woman in a dark tailored suit.
"Marcus, this is US Attorney Amanda Vance—no relation, though she shares your fierce dedication to justice," Mitchell introduced.
Amanda stepped forward, looking down at Lily with genuine warmth before turning to Marcus. "First Sergeant, the video provided by the young girl, Brooke, is admissible. Because the Sterlings used a corporate-owned vehicle and corporate property to facilitate the assault, and because they used interstate financial channels to attempt to bribe local law enforcement to cover it up, we have upgraded this to a federal racketeering and conspiracy case. We aren't just prosecuting Rowan and Jaxson for assault. We are dismantling the entire Sterling organization under the RICO statute."
"What about Miranda?" Marcus asked, his voice low.
"Principal second-degree facilitation of a felony, child endangerment, and conspiracy," Amanda stated firmly. "An arrest warrant has been issued. Federal marshals are executing it right now."
At the Sterling manor, the velvet curtains that Miranda had so calmly drawn closed were now torn down by federal forensic teams searching for evidence. Miranda stood in the grand foyer, her wrists bound in steel handcuffs.
"This is a mistake!" she shrieked at the agents leading her out. "My mother is Evelyn Sterling! You can't do this to me! I didn't touch the girl!"
Evelyn stood on the grand staircase, watching her daughter being dragged away. For the first time in her life, the matriarch looked old. Her skin was sallow, her eyes hollow. She saw Donald Henderson standing by the front door, coordinating the removal of decades of financial records.

"Who are you people?" Evelyn spat, her voice trembling with venomous rage. "You think you can just destroy a family like ours? We are this county!"
Donald looked up, his massive frame radiating absolute authority. "Ma'am, you were a big fish in a very small, dirty pond. But you forgot one thing: you touched the daughter of a United States Marine First Sergeant. You didn't just invite a lawsuit. You invited a legion."
