Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

I froze in the hidden alcove, the open safe staring back at me like a metal eye.
“Julian, what on earth are you doing in the dark?” Vanessa’s footsteps clicked briskly across the hardwood floor of the walk-in closet.
There was no escaping through the bedroom; she was standing directly between me and the exit.
I slipped my phone into my pocket, stepped out of the narrow alcove, and pulled the hidden cedar panel half-shut behind me. The beam of her designer flashlight swept across the room and landed squarely on my face.
Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks. Her travel coat was half-unbuttoned, and her expression—usually a masterpiece of poised elegance—cracked open to reveal something feral and terrifying.
Her eyes flicked past my shoulder to the slightly ajar wall panel.
“You found it,” she said. Her voice lost its honeyed warmth, dropping into a cold, flat register that sounded entirely alien.
“I found it,” I replied, my voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in my ears. “All of it, Vanessa. The neurotoxin. The fake medical files. The forged power of attorney.”
Vanessa didn't panic. She didn't drop her bags or burst into fake tears. Instead, a slow, chilling smile spread across her lips. She reached into her handbag, pulled out a small pearl-handled pocket knife, and calmly flicked the blade open.
“I always knew you were too smart for your own good, Julian,” she whispered, taking a slow step toward me. “That’s why I fell in love with you in the first place. But you were also arrogant. You believed nobody could ever outsmart the great tech genius.”
“Why?” I asked, keeping my body balanced, ready to lunge if she attacked. “Six billion dollars isn't enough? I gave you everything you wanted.”
“Six billion? Please,” she laughed softly, the sound devoid of all human warmth. “My family built this city’s real estate empire before the crash of two thousand eight. When my father died, he left us in debt, surrounded by vultures. I needed capital—massive, liquid capital—to save our name. And Mercer Ridge was sitting right there, ripe for the plucking.”
“So you planned to murder me slowly and take it all.”
“Not murder,” she corrected smoothly, stepping closer. “Medical retirement. You would have lived out your days in a luxurious private suite in Switzerland, drooling into a napkin while I signed the quarterly reports. Everyone would have pitied the brilliant CEO struck down by a mysterious neurological tragedy.”
“You’re insane,” I said.
“I’m ambitious,” Vanessa corrected sharply. Then, her eyes narrowed. “And now, unfortunately, you’ve ruined the timeline.”
She lunged forward with surprising speed, slashing the small blade toward my arm.
I sidestepped instinctively, catching her wrist mid-air and twisting it upward. The pearl-handled knife clattered harmlessly onto the carpet. Vanessa gasped, throwing her weight against me with unexpected fury, her fingernails clawing at my face.
We wrestled backward into the bedroom, knocking over a heavy bedside lamp that shattered on the floor.
Before she could recover, I pinned her wrists against the mattress, breathing heavily, looking down into the face of the woman I had planned to spend the rest of my life with.
“It’s over, Vanessa,” I panted. “The police have copies of everything. My lawyer received an encrypted backup file the moment I opened that safe.”
Vanessa stopped struggling. A strange, twisted smile touched her lips.
“Do you really think the police will believe you over me, Julian?” she whispered, tilting her chin up defiantly. “Check your phone.”
My stomach dropped. I pulled my phone from my pocket.

The screen was completely black. The battery icon flashed a red dead-signal indicator, and when I pressed the power button, nothing happened. The phone had been remotely wiped and fried by a localized electronic pulse emitter hidden inside her handbag.
“Game over, darling,” Vanessa purred beneath me.
