Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the mansion settled into a peaceful, breathing silence, I stepped out onto the wide stone balcony overlooking Lake Michigan.
The autumn air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant pine. The dark waters of the lake shimmered under a blanket of brilliant stars, endless and tranquil.
I closed my eyes for a moment and focused entirely on my senses.
