Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

We arranged to meet Officer Miller at a secluded diner on the outskirts of the city at dusk. He arrived in civilian clothes, looking exhausted and visibly paranoid, his eyes constantly darting to the windows.

"I shouldn't be here," Miller said, refusing to sit down. "If Vance finds out I’m talking to you, my career is over. I’ll be blacklisted from every department in the state."

"Your career is already in jeopardy, Officer Miller," David said smoothly, sliding a folder across the table. "This is a copy of a federal indictment blueprint. If you participate in a cover-up involving child abuse and falsifying public records, you aren't just protecting a bad cop; you’re committing a felony. When the state AG sweeps this department, you can either be a co-defendant or the star witness."

Miller looked at the documents, then at me. I could see the moral conflict tearing him apart. He was a young guy who had joined the force to help people, now realizing he had become an accessory to a monster.

"He made me change the report," Miller whispered, his voice cracking. "Ryan met me in the parking lot after the hospital. He handed me a pre-written statement and told me that if I didn't log it as the official narrative, I’d find myself working the graveyard shift at the maximum-security county jail for the rest of my life. But I kept the original bodycam footage on a personal drive before the department server wiped it."

"Give it to us," I begged. "Please, Miller. Protect that little girl."

With trembling fingers, Miller reached into his pocket and pulled out a small memory card. "The custody hearing is tomorrow at 9:00 AM in Courtroom 4B. The Sheriff himself is going to be there to ensure the judge rules in Ryan’s favor. You need to be ready."

As we left the diner, my phone rang. It was an automated message from the county jail system. Maddie had been taken into emergency custody under a psychiatric hold issued by the county court, initiated by her husband. Ryan was making his final move to isolate her before the hearing.
