Chapter 6 - The Turning Tide

The small house in Akron was modest, with a well-kept garden and a swing set in the backyard. When I knocked on the door, a woman in her early thirties opened it. She had kind eyes, but the moment I introduced myself and mentioned Ryan Vance's name, the color drained completely from her face.

"I can't talk to you," Elena Rodriguez said, her voice shaking as she tried to close the door. "I signed papers. I moved away. I have a life here now. I have a daughter."

"He has a daughter too now, Elena," I said, placing my hand gently against the door to keep it open. "Her name is Mia. She’s three weeks old, and she’s currently in protective custody at Columbus Children’s Hospital because Ryan bruised her ribs while trying to control my sister."

Elena stopped pushing against the door. Her eyes widened, filled with a sudden, painful recognition. "He... he hurt a baby?"

"He’s framing my sister, Maddie, as an unstable mother, just like he tried to do to you," I pleaded, tears stinging my eyes. "He’s using his uniform, his uncle the Sheriff, and the entire department to cover it up. If someone doesn't stand up to him with proof of his past, he’s going to get away with it again, and my niece might not survive."

Elena stood frozen for what felt like an eternity. The rain dripped off the porch awning, filling the silence. Finally, she stepped back and opened the door wide. "Come inside."

For the next two hours, Elena poured her heart out. She showed me the permanent scars on her wrists from where he had handcuffed her to a radiator when she tried to leave him. She explained how the Cleveland department had protected him, forcing her into a corner until she felt she had no choice but to take the money and run.

"But I kept my own copies of everything," Elena said, walking over to a floorboard in her closet and lifting it up to reveal a fireproof lockbox. "The union thought they bought my silence, but I knew a day would come when his luck would run out. I have audio recordings, Clara. Recordings of Ryan admitting to what he did to me, bragging about how his family would always protect him."

She handed me a USB drive. "Take it to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). They handle public corruption and officer-involved crimes at the state level. Don't go to the county prosecutor. Go straight to the state AG’s office. I’ll testify. If they call a grand jury, I will stand up there and tell them exactly what kind of monster Ryan Vance is."

Armed with the USB drive, a profound sense of hope finally began to spark within me. The tide was turning, but I knew the most dangerous part of the journey was still ahead.
