Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the Mercer Name

With the criminal trial concluded, the final piece of our liberation was the restructuring of our lives. The federal courts dissolved the Carrington corporate holdings, and a specialized bankruptcy trustee liquidated the remaining family assets.
Because my original forensic evidence had directly assisted the federal government in recovering tens of millions of dollars in stolen public healthcare funds, the Department of Justice awarded a standard whistleblower percentage to Hallie’s educational trust fund under the False Claims Act. It was more than enough to ensure she could go to any university in the world, completely free of any Carrington influence.
Our final act of closure took place in a quiet probate courtroom in Montpelier, Vermont, a year after the night at Mass General.
The judge, a kind-faced woman with spectacles, looked over our petitions. "You are requesting a formal, legal name change for both yourself and your daughter, correct?"
"Yes, Your Honor," I said, standing beside Hallie.
"And what is the requested name?"
"We are reclaiming my maiden name," I said proudly. "We wish to be legally known as Joanna Mercer and Hallie Mercer."
The judge smiled, her gavel coming down with a firm, satisfying thud. "Petition granted. May your new name bring you the peace and freedom you both richly deserve."
When we walked out of the courthouse, the autumn air was crisp, and the trees were a brilliant canopy of red, orange, and gold. Hallie turned to me, her face glowing with absolute happiness, her smile bright and unburdened.

"We did it, Mom," she said, hugging me tightly. "We're completely free."
"We are, my beautiful girl," I whispered, holding her close. "We are."
