Chapter 6 - The Freezing of the Empire
The fallout was instantaneous and spectacular.
At 11:45 AM, the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts held an unannounced press conference. Standing beside Elena Vance, she announced a multi-count federal indictment against Russell Carrington and Patricia Carrington for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, institutional bribery, and money laundering.
But the headline that captured the public’s attention wasn't the financial crime; it was the domestic assault charge. The Boston Globe had obtained a verified copy of the emergency room medical report and an anonymous leak of the audio recording from the silver pendant. Hearing a prominent billionaire physically assault his teenage daughter and plot to falsely institutionalize his wife sent shockwaves through the corporate and social landscape.
By 1:00 PM, the board of directors of Carrington Health Ventures held an emergency meeting. Russell was summarily stripped of his title as CEO, his corporate voting rights were suspended, and the company's stock price began a catastrophic 40% nose-dive.
I watched the news coverage from the small television in Hallie's hospital room. She was sitting up in bed, eating a bowl of soup, her eyes fixed on the screen as her father was shown being led out of his corporate headquarters in handcuffs by federal marshals.
He didn't look handsome anymore. His tie was loosened, his hair was messy, and he was holding a jacket over his wrists to hide the cuffs.
"He looks small, Mom," Hallie whispered.
"He always was small, sweetheart," I said, sitting beside her and taking her good hand. "He just used a lot of money to make his shadow look big."
Patricia was arrested an hour later at a private airstrip in Bedford, where she was attempting to board a chartered private jet to Switzerland. The federal marshals intercepted her on the tarmac, charging her with flight to avoid prosecution and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Her multi-million-dollar camel coat was replaced by a standard-issue orange jumpsuit by mid-afternoon.
Their high-priced defense attorney, Richard Vance, attempted to secure bail for Russell at an afternoon arraignment, offering a five-million-dollar cash bond. But the prosecution presented the judge's order signed by Judge Albright—who had already been arrested by federal agents at his home earlier that morning—along with the recording of Russell threatening to illegally commit me to a mental facility.
