Chapter 8 - The Final Stand

Kendra’s face drained of color, her polished composure completely shattering.
“Put those down, Tessa. You have no idea what you’re meddling in,” Kendra hissed, taking a step forward as if she might try to physically wrestle the files away.
At that exact moment, Bryce appeared behind Kendra, breathing heavily from his search in the woods. His eyes locked onto the documents in Tessa’s hands, and a dark, desperate look washed over his features.
“You shouldn't have come back, Tessa,” Bryce said quietly, his voice dangerously low. “You’re ruining everything. Do you know how much debt I’m in? If I don't sell this property by the end of the month, I lose everything—my family, my business, my freedom.”
“So you decided to ruin Mom’s life instead?” Tessa stepped forward, shielding Judith behind her. “You locked her up, abused her, and forged her signature? Bryce, I have photos of all of these original documents, and my phone has already uploaded them to my attorney in Richmond. If you touch us, the police will have the warrant before you can even take another step.”
Bryce stopped dead in his tracks. The defiance drained out of him, replaced by the crushing weight of total defeat. He looked at his mother—really looked at her—and saw the profound terror and disappointment etched into her face.
Kendra turned to Bryce, panic in her voice. “Bryce, don't just stand there—!”
“Shut up, Kendra. It’s over,” Bryce muttered, his shoulders slumping heavily as he buried his face in his hands.

Downstairs, the sharp, distinctive flashing blue and red lights of local police cruisers suddenly lit up the front windows, casting dancing shadows across the wood-paneled walls.
Tessa let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for hours. She had called the Fairhaven non-emergency dispatch line and requested a welfare check right before they slipped back into the house through the mudroom, giving the local authorities just enough time to arrive.
