Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Shed

Bryce stepped fully inside, blocking the only exit. He looked different than the brother Tessa remembered—older, harder, his eyes carrying the desperate desperation of a man backed into a corner.
“Bryce, what the hell is going on here?” Tessa demanded, stepping protectively in front of her shivering mother. She kept her fist closed tightly around the small metallic object her mother had given her. “You’re abusing her? You stole everything from her?”
Bryce let out a short, harsh laugh that sounded entirely foreign. “Abusing? Don't be dramatic, Tessa. Mom is old and senile. She falls, she gets confused, she imagines things. Right, Mom?” He threw a sharp, threatening look down at Judith, who shrank back into the shadows with a whimper.
“Don't you dare look at her like that!” Tessa shouted, her voice ringing with rage. “I saw the bruises! I heard what she said! You manipulated an elderly woman with dementia to sign over the family estate, didn't you?”
Bryce’s expression hardened into ice. “She was incompetent. Someone had to take control of the family assets before she gave them away to sketchy charities or lost track of her finances. Kendra and I sacrificed our lives to move in here and take care of her. We earned this house.”
“You forged documents, didn't you?” Tessa challenged, her mind racing back to the metallic object hidden in her palm. She glanced down and managed to peek at it—it was an old, heavy brass skeleton key, the kind used for the antique roll-top desk in the study where their father’s physical safety deposit box and paper documents were kept.
“You’re not leaving here until you hand over whatever phone or evidence you think you’ve gathered,” Bryce said, taking a threatening step forward, his large frame looming over her. “Give me your phone, Tessa. Now.”
Kendra appeared behind Bryce in the doorway, her arms crossed, looking entirely unremorseful. “Just take her keys and phone, Bryce. We can’t let her go back to Richmond with half-baked stories. We’ve worked too hard to set up the new mortgage and asset transfer.”

Tessa realized she was trapped. But she also knew she held the key to blowing their entire scheme wide open.
With a burst of sudden agility, Tessa shoved Bryce hard against a stack of empty crates, grabbed her mother by the hand, and bolted out of the shed into the darkness before they could recover their footing.
