Chapter 4 - The Invitation They Couldn't Refuse

The plan required precision, timing, and a touch of theatrical flair that felt entirely out of character for a retired librarian, which was precisely why it was going to work.
Over the next four days, working in close coordination with Mrs. Higgins and a high-end concierge service in Palm Beach, I set the wheels in motion. First, I arranged for formal, hand-calligraphed invitations to be delivered to Ethan’s suburban residence via an upscale courier service on the morning of December twenty-third.
The envelopes were thick, cream-colored linen stock, stamped with a golden wax seal bearing an intertwined 'V' crest that Mrs. Higgins assured me would look sufficiently aristocratic to catch Eleanor’s discerning eye.
Inside each envelope was a formal invitation to a Christmas Eve gala and Christmas Day dinner hosted at The Grand Azure in Palm Beach by the Vance Family Estate Trust. It listed no specific host’s first name—only “The Vance Family Estate”—written in elegant copperplate script.
I knew Ethan would assume it was some high-net-worth networking event or a corporate gala associated with my late brother’s tech startup holdings, which he knew had yielded some residual wealth. More importantly, I knew Eleanor and Richard would insist on attending any high-society Palm Beach gathering, especially one with a prestigious beachfront address. It was the kind of social currency they lived for.
On December twenty-third at precisely ten in the morning, my phone rang while I was sitting in the estate’s sunlit library, surrounded by antique leather-bound books.
I let it ring twice before tapping the screen.
“Mom?” Ethan’s voice sounded breathless, a mixture of shock, confusion, and mild panic vibrating through the speaker.
“Good morning, Ethan. Are you enjoying the holiday preparations with Eleanor and Richard?”
“Mom, what is this?” he blurted out, ignoring my question entirely. A rustling of paper came through the line—evidently, he was holding the heavy cream invitation in his hand. “An envelope was just delivered to our house by a private courier. It’s addressed to our entire family. A Christmas gala and dinner at... at The Grand Azure in Palm Beach? Do you know anything about this?”
I leaned back into the velvet armchair, keeping my voice calm and measured. “An invitation? How interesting. What does it say?”
“It says we’re invited to a private family estate celebration for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day,” Ethan said, his voice rising in disbelief. “Mom, do you have any idea how much a property like The Grand Azure costs? That’s prime Palm Beach real estate! Multi-million-dollar waterfront! Bianca’s parents looked it up online—it’s valued at fifteen million dollars! Some ultra-wealthy family or corporate trust bought it recently, and apparently, they’re hosting a massive holiday gathering. But why did our address get a formal courier delivery?”
I smiled faintly, tracing the gold foil lettering of an open book on my lap. “Perhaps someone noticed your corporate profile, Ethan. Or perhaps it’s a clerical error.”
“A clerical error? They spelled my name correctly, and Bianca’s, and Noah’s! Eleanor thinks it might be a private investor event tied to my firm’s recent acquisition deals, but neither my boss nor anyone in executive management knows anything about it.” He paused, taking a sharp breath. “Mom... did you know about this? Did someone invite you too?”
I let out a soft, non-committal hum. “Well, Ethan, strange things happen during the holidays. Are you and Bianca planning to go?”
“Go? Of course Eleanor and Richard want to check it out—they think it’s a high-society networking opportunity with local elites. But what about our plans? What about our small, intimate family dinner?”
“Ah,” I said smoothly. “Didn't you tell me not to come for Christmas dinner because your house was getting too crowded and you wanted something small and intimate? I simply assumed you wouldn't be interested in a large estate gathering with high-society guests.”
Silence stretched across the line. I could almost visualize Ethan standing in his modern kitchen, staring at the invitation while Eleanor hovered nearby demanding to know who was on the phone.
“Well... that was different,” Ethan stammered, his pride clearly warring with his curiosity. “That was just us. But a fifteen-million-dollar beachfront estate? Bianca’s parents are already dressing up. Eleanor insists that if it’s a legitimate invitation, we can't possibly pass up the networking potential. Even Noah is excited because the courier note mentioned a private beach and a heated pool.”
“It sounds wonderful, truly,” I said, keeping my tone entirely neutral. “I suppose you should RSVP according to the instructions on the card.”
“We already did—online via the private link provided on the back of the envelope,” Ethan confessed, sounding slightly sheepish. “The RSVP system accepted our family code immediately. We’re confirmed for arrival tomorrow afternoon, Christmas Eve.”
“Splendid,” I said. “Have a safe trip down, Ethan. Enjoy the estate.”
“Wait, Mom—are you going? Did you get an invitation too?”
May you like
“I have my own holiday plans, dear,” I replied softly. “I’ll talk to you after the holidays. Give Noah a kiss for me.”
Before he could demand further explanation, I tapped the red button and ended the call.
