When Sarah presented the offer to me in her office, I didn't hesitate for a single second.
"No," I said firmly. "No money is worth leaving a door open for him to hurt Lily. I want full custody. I want a permanent protective order."
"He will fight dirty in the courtroom," Sarah warned gently. "His lawyer will try to paint you as vengeful, and they will attempt to question Lily’s recollection."
"She was four," I replied, my voice steadying with a strength I hadn't known I possessed. "She didn't imagine her mother’s leg breaking. She didn't imagine the secret signal. We are going to trial."

Meanwhile, Lily began seeing a child psychologist specializing in trauma. Dr. Aris was a soft-spoken woman who used play therapy to help children process fear. Slowly, Lily began to draw pictures that reflected her internal world. In the beginning, her drawings featured large, dark figures towering over small, doorless houses. But as weeks turned into months at my father’s home, her pictures shifted. The houses gained doors, sunshine appeared in the corners of the pages, and the dark figures disappeared altogether.
