Chapter 10 - A New Chapter of Light

On Lily’s seventh birthday, we threw a party in our backyard. The garden was filled with colorful balloons, the sound of children laughing, and the warm aroma of fresh grilled food. Friends from school, neighbors, and Sarah—who had become a close family friend—gathered under the warm summer sun.
As Lily blew out the candles on her cake, surrounded by people who loved and protected her, she made a wish and looked up at me with bright, shining eyes.
"Mommy," she whispered as I handed her a slice of cake. "Do you know what I wished for?"
"What did you wish for, sweetie?" I asked, smoothing a stray curl from her forehead.
"I wished that every little girl in the world has a Grandpa like mine and a Mommy like you."
My heart swelled with an emotion so deep it brought happy tears to my eyes. I knelt down beside her, gathering her into a warm, gentle hug.
"You don't ever have to worry about signals or secret phone calls ever again, Lily," I whispered in her ear. "From now on, the only thing you ever have to do is live, play, and be happy."
"I know, Mommy," she replied softly, pulling back to look at me with a clear, calm smile. "Because we’re home now."

Later that evening, after the guests had left and Lily was sound asleep in her yellow room, dreaming peaceful dreams, I sat on the front porch with my father. The night air was cool and sweet, filled with the gentle chirping of crickets under a sky full of stars.
I held my warm mug of tea, leaning back against the wooden chair, completely at peace. The past was no longer a cage holding me captive; it was simply the dark valley we had walked through to reach this beautiful, sunlit height. We were safe, we were free, and our story was finally ours to write.
