Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary

An hour later, a private luxury van arranged by Arthur picked us up. The rain had turned into a soft, steady snowfall, dusting the pine trees along the highway.

Grandma sat next to me, holding my hand. Her touch was warm, solid, and reassuring. Maya was fast asleep in a brand-new, top-of-the-line car seat that Arthur’s assistant had rushed to purchase before we departed.

"Where are we going, Grandma?" I asked softly, staring out at the white landscape blurring past the window.

"We are going home, darling," Grandma said softly. "To my estate in Boston. You and Maya will never have to worry about a roof over your head, a meal on your table, or a warm coat on your back ever again."

I looked down at my worn jeans and my soaked sneakers. The exhaustion of two years of relentless survival seemed to hit me all at once, weighing down my eyelids and pulling at my limbs.

"I tried so hard, Grandma," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I worked three jobs. I tried to pay Marcus’s hospital bills. I tried to give Maya everything, but I felt like I was drowning every single day."

Grandma reached up and gently wiped a tear from my cheek. "You didn't fail, Sarah. You survived an impossible storm created by the very people who were supposed to protect you. You are the strongest woman I know, just like your grandfather was. But your battle is over now. It’s time for you to heal."

We arrived at the private airfield, where Grandma’s jet was waiting on the tarmac. As we boarded, the flight attendant immediately brought out warm fleece blankets, fresh meals, and baby supplies.

For the first time in two years, I sat back in a soft leather seat, feeling warm air surround me. I didn't have to count quarters. I didn't have to worry about an eviction notice sliding under the door.

Grandma took Maya into her arms, smiling as the baby babbled happily, playing with the soft fabric of Grandma’s sweater.

"Tomorrow, Arthur will begin the legal process of transferring your full inheritance into an irrevocable trust that only you control," Grandma said calmly. "The money that was stolen from you will be recovered through the liquidation of Victoria and Julian’s assets—their house, their cars, their investments. Everything they built with stolen funds will be sold to restore what is rightfully yours."

"I don't even care about the money," I said, leaning my head against the window. "I just wanted my family."

"I am your family, Sarah," Grandma said, her eyes glistening with rare emotion. "And I will spend the rest of my days ensuring you and Maya have the love, security, and peace you deserve."
