Chapter 4 - The Reckoning

"Grandma, no! Please!" Victoria pleaded, dropping to her knees and dragging herself across the carpet to grab the hem of Grandma’s dress. "It will ruin us! Chloe’s reputation, Julian’s career—everything will be destroyed!"
"You destroyed yourselves when you decided to prey upon a widow and an infant," Grandma said coldly, pulling her dress away from Victoria’s grasp. "Arthur, make the call."
As Arthur pulled out his phone to contact the authorities, Uncle Julian suddenly stood up, his posture shifting from defeat to desperate desperation. "Wait! Eleanor, if you call the police, you’ll never see a dime of that money back! We can liquidate assets! We can sell the house, the cars, everything!"
"I do not care about the money, Julian," Grandma replied, looking at him with utter disdain. "I have more money than I could ever spend. What I care about is justice for Sarah and Maya. And what I care about is purging this rotten deceit from my family."
Within twenty minutes, two police cruisers pulled up to the estate, their red and blue lights flashing against the snow-covered driveway. The sound of sirens echoed down the quiet suburban street, drawing curious glances from neighbors who peered out from their pristine windows.
Two officers entered the home, greeted by Arthur, who handed them a cleanly organized folder containing the initial forensic findings, wire transfers, and stolen trust documents.
"Victoria Sterling-Hayes and Julian Hayes," the lead officer read from the document before looking up at the terrified couple. "You are under arrest for grand larceny and wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the handcuffs clicked around Victoria’s wrists, she wailed, looking toward my mother. "Evelyn! Tell them! Tell them you took half! You signed the papers too!"
The second officer turned to Evelyn. "Ma'am, you'll need to come down to the station for questioning as well."
Evelyn looked at me, her eyes filled with frantic panic. "Sarah! Tell them not to do this! I’m your mother! You can't let them take me away!"
I stood there, holding Maya tightly against my chest. Tears streamed down my face, washing away years of self-doubt, isolation, and guilt. For two years, I had thought I was failing as a mother, struggling in poverty while believing my family simply couldn't afford to help me. The reality—that they had built their comfort on my suffering—was a pain deeper than any physical wound.
"You stopped being my mother the day you decided my daughter’s hunger was worth less than your luxury," I said softly, my voice unwavering.
I turned my back on her as the officers led Evelyn, Victoria, and Julian out into the freezing air, their wrists bound in steel.
The front door clicked shut. The grand mansion fell into a profound, heavy silence.
Chloe sat on the bottom stair, crying softly into her hands. Grandma walked over to her, placing a gentle hand on her granddaughter’s shoulder. "Chloe, child. You knew nothing of this, did you?"

Chloe shook her head violently. "I swear, Grandma, I had no idea. I thought Mom was using her own savings... I would never have let Sarah suffer like that!"
Grandma nodded gently. "I believe you. But this house is no longer a home. Sarah, gather your things. We are leaving."
