Chapter 9 - The Safe Harbor

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow across the backyard, our small family gathering drew to a close. My parents and Caroline packed up their things, offering warm hugs and kisses to Leo and Ruby before heading home.
The quiet evening air settled around the house, cool and refreshing. James and I sat together on the back porch steps, watching the stars slowly blink into existence in the twilight sky.
Ruby came running up the steps, slightly out of breath and clutching her bubble wand, her cheeks flushed with the happy exhaustion of a day well spent.
"Mama, Daddy, can we roast marshmallows tomorrow?" she asked, her big, bright eyes shining with excitement.
"Of course we can, sweet girl," James smiled, pulling her onto his lap and wrapping his strong arms around both her and me as I leaned against his shoulder with Leo resting peacefully in my arms. "We can do whatever you want."
Ruby leaned her head against her father’s chest, content and safe.

Looking down at my son, and then up at my brave, resilient daughter, a profound sense of peace washed over my soul. The storm had been fierce, and the lightning had struck close enough to shatter our world, but we had weathered it together. We had protected each other, stood our ground, and emerged on the other side unbroken.
Justice had been served, the wicked had reaped the consequences of their own malice, and our home had been restored to what it was always meant to be: a sanctuary of unconditional love, warmth, and unshakeable light.
