Chapter 4 - The Net Closes

Three days passed in a haze of medical monitors, quiet prayers, and relentless police investigations.
Ruby remained in her hospital bed, looking heartbreakingly small beneath the crisp white sheets, a thick white bandage wrapped securely around her head. Every time I looked at her pale face, a fresh wave of blinding fury washed over me.
Fortunately, the law was moving swiftly. Detective Vance kept us updated every few hours. Because of the crystal-clear security footage we handed over—which captured not only the theft of the cash envelopes but the cold-blooded, unprovoked assault with the heavy brass lamp—a judge had issued an immediate felony arrest warrant for Natalie. Moreover, because she had actively fled the jurisdiction with Patricia aiding and abetting her evasion, warrants were out for both of them.
On the fourth morning, Detective Vance walked into Ruby’s ICU room while James and I were sitting quietly by her bedside.
"Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds," Detective Vance greeted us in a hushed, respectful tone, nodding to the sleeping child. "I have some news. We tracked them down."
James looked up sharply. "Where?"
"They were hiding out at a vacant rental property owned by an old family friend in Vermont," Vance said, pulling out a notebook. "Local authorities apprehended them early this morning as they were trying to pack their car to move further north. Natalie put up a fight, screaming that she was a victim of a smear campaign, but it didn't work. She’s currently being extradited back here in handcuffs. She’s facing charges of first-degree aggravated assault, child abuse, and grand larceny."
A dark, heavy burden lifted from my chest, though it was instantly replaced by a fierce hunger for justice. "And Patricia?"
"Your mother-in-law is being charged with accessory after the fact and obstruction of justice for helping her flee," Vance replied steadily. "They are both currently being held without bail."
"Good," James said, his voice flat, devoid of any familial warmth or hesitation. "Let them rot. I never want to see either of them ever again."
Just as Detective Vance nodded and stepped out to give us privacy, a soft, faint sound broke the quiet hum of the room.
My head snapped toward the bed.
Ruby’s eyelids fluttered. A tiny, distressed whimper escaped her dry lips, and her small fingers twitched against the cotton blanket.
"James! Look!" I gasped, jumping up from my chair and rushing to her side.
"Ruby? Sweetheart? Can you hear Mama?" I whispered, leaning over her, stroking her uninjured cheek with trembling fingers.
Slowly, agonizingly, Ruby opened her eyes. They were hazy and unfocused at first, blinking against the harsh hospital lights, before they slowly adjusted and locked onto my face. Recognition flickered in her eyes, followed by a sudden, instinctual flash of fear. Her small hands flew up defensively toward her head, whimpering in pain.
"Shh, shh, it's okay, baby. You're safe. Mama and Daddy are right here," James choked out, kneeling beside the bed, gently pulling her tiny hands away from her bandage to kiss her knuckles.
Ruby blinked again, tears welling in the corners of her eyes. Her voice was raspy and weak, barely above a whisper. "Mama... the bad lady... she hit me..."
"I know, sweet girl. I know," I wept, kissing her forehead gently, taking care not to touch her injury. "She’s gone, baby. She can never hurt you again. The police caught her."
Ruby let out a long, shuddering sigh, her tense little body finally relaxing back into the mattress as she realized she was safe. "My brother... is my baby brother okay?"
I let out a watery laugh, resting my hand over my still-swollen belly. "He's wonderful, sweetheart. He's been kicking every day, waiting for his big sister to wake up."
May you like
Ruby offered a tiny, weak smile, her eyelids drooping heavily from exhaustion. "Tell him... I'm going to protect him."
"We know you will, baby girl. We know," James whispered, burying his face in her blanket as tears of pure relief soaked the fabric.
