Chapter 9 - A New Foundation

As Meadow entered her pre-teen years, our little family expanded in the most wonderful, unexpected way. Through my work as an interior designer, I met a man named Thomas. He was a landscape architect—a gentle, quiet man with laugh lines around his eyes and a heart as big as the sky.
Thomas didn't try to force himself into Meadow's life. He understood her boundaries perfectly. He began by helping us expand our backyard garden, teaching Meadow how to graft rose bushes and nurture delicate orchids.
Slowly, patiently, Thomas earned Meadow’s trust. He showed her what a real father figure looked like—someone who listens, someone who respects boundaries, and someone who protects without suffocating.
One evening, when Meadow was twelve, Thomas invited us out to a beautiful dinner to celebrate my birthday. Toward the end of the meal, Thomas looked at Meadow, his face becoming uncharacteristically nervous.
"Meadow," Thomas said gently, reaching into his pocket. "Before I ask your mother this question, I need to ask you first. Because you two are a package deal, and your happiness is the most important thing to me."
He pulled out a small, velvet box containing a simple, stunning emerald ring. "Would it be okay with you if I asked your mom to marry me? I promise to spend the rest of my life making sure both of you are loved and protected."
Meadow looked at the ring, then at Thomas, and then at me. Her eyes filled with happy tears. She didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around Thomas’s neck, hugging him tightly.
"Yes!" Meadow laughed. "But only if we can plant an entire field of strawberries at the new house!"

"Deal," Thomas laughed, hugging her back before looking at me with a question in his eyes.
I nodded, my heart overflowing with a profound, beautiful peace. We had built a wall to keep the monsters out, and now, we were building a beautiful home to let the love in.
