Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Dustin

With Francine’s help, I hired a fierce family attorney named Robert Vance (no relation to the judge, though he possessed the same relentless legal instinct). Robert looked over the affidavit from Judith and let out a cold, humorless laugh.

"They are overplaying their hand," Robert said, tapping the papers. "They think money can buy reality. But we have something they can't bribe: medical records and a mandatory report from a licensed pediatrician."

However, Dustin wasn’t playing by the rules of the court. A week before our next preliminary hearing, I received a barrage of text messages from unknown numbers—photos of me walking Meadow to Dr. Aris’s office, photos of Francine’s house, photos of my car parked at the grocery store. Dustin was paying a private investigator to stalk us.

One afternoon, as I was leaving a local bakery with a box of the strawberry pastries Meadow used to love, a figure stepped out from behind a brick pillar.

It was Dustin. He looked different. The pristine, perfectly pressed husband I had known looked disheveled. His tie was loose, and there were dark circles under his eyes. But the arrogance was still there.

"We need to talk," he said, reaching out to grab my arm.

I stepped back instantly, my hand flying to my pocket where I kept my phone. "You are violating a restraining order, Dustin. Get away from me, or I will call the police right now."

"Oh, stop being so dramatic, Claire!" he snapped, his voice rising. "My mother is beside herself! Her reputation in the country club is ruined because people are gossiping about the court filing. Do you have any idea what this is doing to our family name?"

I looked at the man I had spent nearly a decade with. I looked at his expensive shoes, his tailored suit, and his complete lack of remorse. He wasn't worried about his daughter's bleeding scalp. He was worried about country club gossip.

"Your mother ruined her own reputation when she abused our daughter," I said, my voice icy and calm. "And you ruined yours when you stood by and watched."

"She didn't abuse her! It's just hair!" Dustin yelled, taking a step forward. "Meadow was becoming spoiled, just like you! You're ruining her future over a lesson in humility!"

"If you don't step back in three seconds, I'm pressing the emergency dial," I said, showing him my phone screen. The numbers 911 were already entered.

Dustin sneered, but the panic in his eyes was palpable. He knew a violation arrest would destroy his custody case completely. "You're going to lose everything, Claire. My mother has the best legal team in the state. We will take Meadow, and you will never see her again."

He turned and stormed off, jumping into his luxury SUV. As I watched him drive away, my hands finally began to shake. But it wasn't fear anymore. It was fury. I immediately called Robert and handed over the security footage from the bakery's outdoor cameras. Dustin had just handed us the perfect weapon for the next court date.
