Chapter 5 - Uncovering the Past

With Daniel behind bars awaiting arraignment, the police obtained a search warrant for his private home office and his personal computer.

Officer Ramirez called me two days later to ask if I could come down to the precinct to look at some recovered files. I agreed, dropping Lily off with a licensed child psychologist who specialized in trauma recovery.

At the precinct, Officer Ramirez led me into a small, windowless interrogation room. A laptop sat open on the metal table.

“We unlocked his encrypted desktop,” Officer Ramirez said, pulling out a chair for me. “We found financial records, old emails, and a digital journal. It paints a very clear, very disturbing picture of what happened before you came into his life, Elena.”

“What kind of picture?” I asked, sitting down.

“Lily’s biological mother didn’t just walk away,” Ramirez said quietly. He turned the laptop toward me. “Her name was Clara. Three years ago, Clara tried to leave Daniel because of his controlling, abusive behavior. When she threatened to take Lily with her, Daniel filed emergency motions, twisted the truth in court, and used his financial resources to threaten her with total ruin if she didn't sign away her custody rights and walk away.”

My breath hitched as I looked at a scanned copy of a legal custody agreement dated four years ago.

“And Clara?” I asked.

“She cracked under the pressure,” Ramirez explained. “Daniel made her believe she was an unfit mother. He convinced her that Lily would be better off without her influence. Clara left the state, heartbroken and broken down psychologically. But Daniel didn’t stop there.”

He clicked open another folder labeled Notes.

On the screen appeared a series of digital diary entries written by Daniel himself. My eyes scanned the glowing text, and my stomach turned to ice.

“Lily is becoming too much like her mother. Stubborn, rebellious, and showing signs of physical greed. If I don't break her habits now, she will turn out just like Clara. Children must be molded. They must learn that love is earned through obedience and restraint.”

Another entry read:

“Refused dinner again tonight. Good. She’s learning. Kept her focused on the goal: Mommy only loves small girls. If she stays thin, Mommy will come back through that door one day.”

I pushed the laptop away, tears stinging my eyes. “He used her mother’s absence as a psychological weapon against a toddler. He tortured her mind just to keep her under absolute control.”

“Yes, he did,” Officer Ramirez said grimly. “And because of those digital entries, along with Clara’s contact information which we managed to track down, we have an airtight felony case against him. He’s facing multiple counts of aggravated child abuse and psychological torture. He won't be seeing freedom for a very long time.”

“Can we... can we contact Clara?” I asked suddenly.

Officer Ramirez nodded. “We already reached out to her through social services. She’s living two states away, and when she heard what was happening to Lily... well, she’s getting on the first flight here.”
