Chapter 10 - The Brightest Stars

Years later, the house felt entirely different. The lingering ghosts of the past had long since faded, replaced by the warm, chaotic energy of a home filled with life, laughter, and love.

Lily was fifteen now—a tall, graceful teenager with bright blond hair and eyes that sparkled with sharp intelligence and fierce resilience. She was the captain of her high school debate team, an avid painter, and someone who approached food and life with a joyful, healthy enthusiasm that never ceased to make my heart swell.

On a clear, warm evening in late May, the three of us stood out on the back patio. Clara and I sat side by side in cushioned lounge chairs, sipping iced tea, while Lily stood near the edge of the lawn, adjusting a brand-new professional telescope mounted on a sturdy tripod.

High school graduation was just around the corner for Lily, and college applications were already rolling in with glowing acceptance letters from top universities. But tonight was all about celebration, relaxation, and a family tradition we had started years ago.

“Okay, coordinates locked!” Lily announced, spinning around with a bright grin on her face. “Mom, Mom-Elena, you have to come look at this. You can see the rings of Saturn clear as day tonight.”

Clara and I exchanged amused glances, standing up from our chairs and walking over to the telescope.

I leaned down, placing my eye against the cold rubber eyepiece. Millions of miles away, suspended in the velvet blackness of the cosmos, shone a brilliant, beautiful planet surrounded by breathtaking rings of light. It was magnificent, steady, and enduring.

“It’s incredible, sweetie,” I whispered, stepping aside so Clara could take a turn.

Lily smiled, looking up at the vast night sky with an expression of pure wonder. The glow of the stars caught her face, illuminating features that carried both Clara’s grace and the unyielding strength she had forged through her own survival.

She wasn't the timid little girl who used to hide half-eaten bananas in a toy box or whisper apologies in the dark anymore. She was a young woman of incredible depth, courage, and light.

Clara stepped back from the telescope, wrapping one arm around Lily’s waist and pulling me into her other side, sandwiching the three of us together under the open canopy of the night sky.

“What are you thinking about, kiddo?” Clara asked gently, resting her chin on Lily’s shoulder.

Lily looked up at the stars, then turned her head, looking lovingly between Clara and me. A soft, content smile touched her lips.

“I was just thinking,” Lily said, her voice clear, confident, and filled with absolute peace, “that no matter how dark the night gets, the stars are always up there. You just have to know who is holding your hand while you look for them.”

I squeezed her hand tight, feeling the warm summer breeze sweep across the yard, carrying away every shadow of yesterday and leaving behind a future that was wide open, bright, and endlessly safe.
