Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

Clara’s face was a masterpiece of manufactured concern as she took a slow step onto the stone porch, adjusting the silk lapels of her cream-colored cardigan. “Darling, what are you talking about? I was upstairs in my study taking a call from the charity committee. Is Lily alright? Why is there glass on the driveway?”

Ethan stared at her, the scales falling from his eyes with brutal clarity. For three years, since marrying Clara after his first wife passed away, he had brushed off minor red flags—the subtle coldness toward Lily, the quiet dismissals, the cold efficiency with which she managed the household. But this was no longer a matter of distant stepmother dynamics. It was attempted murder.

“Don’t touch her,” Ethan said, his voice dropping to a register so low and dangerous that Clara visibly flinched. He stood between Clara and Maria, who was nursing her blood-soaked forearms in the care of a second paramedic.

“Ethan, you’re hysterical,” Clara gasped, casting a sharp, warning glare at Maria before softening her tone back toward him. “Look at Maria’s hands. She’s frantic, clearly confused. Did she do something to the car? Did she leave Lily in there by mistake and panic?”

Maria lifted her head, her voice trembling but steady with absolute conviction. “I did not! I saw you, Mrs. Graves. You walked out with the SUV keys, locked the doors through the driver side, and dropped the key fob in your designer clutch while Lily cried from the backseat.”

“You insolent lying snake!” Clara snapped, her polished facade cracking completely. Her eyes narrowed into slits. “Ethan, are you going to take the word of an undocumented maid over your own wife? She probably staged this whole hero routine to extort money from us!”

“Maria isn’t undocumented, Clara,” Ethan said, his tone chillingly level. “Her legal paperwork sits right in my home office desk. Which tells me you don't know a damn thing about her—or about what I will do to protect my child.”

A detective pulled up to the driveway, his vehicle lights flashing softly against the estate’s tall iron gates. Detective Marcus Vance stepped out, observing the shattered glass, the blood, and the tension vibrating in the air.

“Mr. Graves? I need to ask a few questions about what transpired here.”

Clara stepped forward quickly, putting on a faint, tremulous smile. “Officer, thank you for coming so quickly. Our housekeeper appears to have suffered a nervous breakdown and broken our vehicle window—”

“Detective,” Ethan interrupted smoothly, handing his personal phone to the officer. “I want a full criminal investigation into my wife for attempted murder and child endangerment. And I want her off my property immediately.”

Clara gasped, her cheeks flushing red. “Ethan! How dare you!”

“I built this house, Clara,” Ethan said, leaning down until he was inches from her face, his gaze burning with cold fire. “And I will pull the earth apart to burn every lie you’ve ever told me.”
