Chapter 7 - The Brotherhood’s Vigil

The sterile white walls of the pediatric recovery ward were a stark contrast to the grease-stained, oil-slicked environment of the Iron Skull garage, but for the men of the club, loyalty didn't have an address.

It was visiting hours on a crisp Tuesday afternoon, and the nurses at the front desk had initially panicked when five massive bikers wearing leather vests emblazoned with skull patches walked through the front doors. But Big Mike had anticipated the reaction; he had already cleared the visit with Detective Vance and the hospital administrator, armed with official legal authorization and a basket of oversized stuffed animals that looked hilariously out of place in their massive, tattooed hands.

“Easy on the corners, Bear,” Snake muttered under his breath as they navigated the narrow hallway, carrying a box loaded down with coloring books, crayons, and a brand-new plush puppy that dwarfed the real Patches.

When they reached Room 402, the door was propped open just a few inches. Through the gap, they saw Mia sitting up in bed, a small smile playing across her face as she carefully unwrapped a foil-wrapped chicken sandwich that Big Mike had specially smuggled in from her favorite local diner.

And guarding the doorway from the inside, lying majestically across the linoleum floor, was Goliath.

The giant pitbull raised his heavy head as the bikers approached. Instead of a growl, a low, rumbling purr of recognition vibrated in his chest. His tail gave two slow, heavy thumps against the floor.

“Look who’s here, sweet pea,” Big Mike whispered gently as he pushed the door open all the way, ducking his head to clear the frame.

Mia’s eyes lit up with genuine joy. The hollow, haunted look that had shadowed her face when she first cowered behind the tires in the garage was entirely gone, replaced by the bright, luminous expression of a seven-year-old child who finally knew she was safe.

“Mr. Mike!” Mia chirped, setting her sandwich down carefully on the tray table.

Bear, a man who had survived two tours in the infantry and a decade of bare-knuckle brawling, carefully knelt down beside the hospital bed, his massive arms trembling slightly as he handed over the giant plush puppy. “Found this down at the toy store, kiddo,” Bear rumbled, clearing his throat awkwardly. “Thought... well, thought Patches might need a big brother to watch over him while he heals up.”

Mia hugged the giant stuffed animal fiercely, burying her face in its soft fur before looking up at the circle of hardened men who looked more like an army than a welcoming committee. “Thank you. Is Patches going to be okay?”

“Doc says the little guy’s healing like a champ,” Snake chimed in, offering a rare, gentle grin that softened the harsh lines of his weathered face. “And as for you? You’ve got a whole lot of people making sure you never have to look over your shoulder again.”

Just then, the door clicked open further, and Detective Sarah Vance walked into the room, holding a thick manila folder. Her expression was serious, but there was a quiet sense of satisfaction in her eyes.

“Gentlemen,” Vance nodded to the bikers, acknowledging their presence without hesitation. She then turned her attention to Mia. “Mia, honey, I have some news that I think you’re going to want to hear.”

Mia clutched her stuffed animal tighter, her eyes darting between the detective and Big Mike. “Is he... is he coming back?”

“No, Mia,” Detective Vance said softly, kneeling down so she was at eye level with the little girl. “Arthur Sterling isn’t coming back. The judge has officially revoked all of his parental and guardianship rights, and the prosecutors are moving forward with a full indictment on multiple felony counts. He’s going to be facing a very long time behind bars.”

A collective, audible sigh of relief seemed to sweep through the room. Even Goliath let out a long, heavy exhale, laying his massive head back down on his paws as if a crushing weight had finally been lifted from his shoulders.

“What about... what about my mom?” Mia whispered, her voice dropping lower, tinged with a mix of fear and lingering sadness.

Vance’s expression softened even more. “Your mother is going through a court-mandated evaluation, Mia. But the court has already ruled that you will not be returning to that house. A permanent guardian has been appointed—a wonderful family member on your mother’s side who lives out of state, an aunt who has been trying to reach you for years but was blocked by Arthur.”

Mia blinked back a tear, but this time, it wasn't a tear of terror or pain. It was a tear of pure, unadulterated freedom.

“And what about Goliath?” Mia asked quickly, her small hand reaching down to stroke the pitbull’s scarred head. “And Patches? They have to come too.”

Big Mike looked down at the giant dog, then over at Detective Vance, a slow, knowing smile spreading across his weathered face.

“Well, kiddo,” Mike said, crossing his arms over his leather vest. “Goliath belongs to the club. And the club doesn't just abandon family. Looks like you’ve got a permanent security detail whether you want one or not.”
