Chapter 2 - The Eruption of Instinct

The silence in the garage became absolute. The rhythmic dripping of the rain outside sounded like a ticking clock against the tension thick enough to choke on.

Arthur Sterling, clad in his expensive linen shirt and designer loafers, took two measured steps into the warm glow of the overhead fluorescent lights. His face was a masterclass in paternal anguish. He had the furrowed brow of a man worried sick, the slight tremble in his lower lip of a father who had spent hours searching the dark, unforgiving streets for his precious child.

“Mia, honey, thank God,” Arthur breathed, his voice rich with feigned relief as he made a move toward the back of the garage. “You had us terrified. Your mother is at home crying her eyes out.”

But Arthur didn't get another step.

Before Big Mike could even shift his weight, Goliath moved. The giant pitbull didn't growl—a growl was a warning, and Goliath wasn't interested in warning anymore. He went from a dead weight resting against Mia’s small frame to a lightning bolt of sheer, unadulterated muscle.

Thud-thud-thud.

The concrete floor trembled beneath a hundred pounds of charging fury. Goliath cleared the space between the tool benches and the entrance in less than a second, planting his massive, scarred chest squarely between Arthur Sterling and the little girl.

Arthur slammed on the brakes, stumbling backward with a sharp gasp. His pristine composure shattered in an instant, replaced by a flash of raw, primal terror. His eyes bulged, locking onto the rows of yellowed teeth and the deep, jagged scars that tracked across the dog’s skull—marks earned from a brutal past before Big Mike rescued him from an illegal fighting ring.

“Get that—get that beast away from me!” Arthur shrieked, his voice climbing an octave, losing all of its sophisticated resonance. He raised a manicured hand, pointing a trembling finger at the dog. “Do you hear me? Call your animal off, or I’ll have the police seize every single one of you and shut this filthy operation down!”

Big Mike slowly stepped forward, his massive frame blocking Arthur's line of sight to Mia. Mike didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. When Big Mike spoke, the room listened.

“Nobody’s shutting anything down, Sterling,” Mike said, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling register that carried the weight of a freight train. “And nobody’s calling the cops just yet. Because if the cops come, they’re going to want to look at a few things. Like why a seven-year-old little girl is hiding in my garage with finger-shaped bruises on her arms and a puppy with a shattered leg.”

Arthur’s face drained of color, turning the greyish hue of wet ash. The high-powered executive mask didn't just crack; it pulverized into dust. For a brief second, his eyes darted toward the exit, calculating his odds. But thirty pairs of eyes—hardened, unblinking, and entirely devoid of pity—pinned him to the spot.

“She’s... she’s clumsy,” Arthur stammered, his tongue suddenly feeling like sandpaper. He forced a strained, wet laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement. “Kids fall down, don't they? Playgrounds, bikes... you know how it is. She’s imaginative. She probably tripped over the dog.”

“Goliath doesn't trip people, Sterling,” Snake, the club’s road captain, growled from the corner, slowly spinning a heavy torque wrench in his calloused palm. “And Goliath doesn't lie. But you? You look like a man who’s about to sweat right through his thousand-dollar shirt.”

May you like

Arthur opened his mouth to retort, to threaten them with his social standing, his lawyers, his wealth. But Goliath took a single, deliberate step forward. The pitbull’s upper lip curled just a fraction, revealing the ivory tips of his canines, and a deep, sub-audible rumble vibrated through the concrete floor. It was a sound that told everyone in the room: One more word, and the contract is void.

Arthur clamped his mouth shut, swallowing hard. The bravado evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, cornered man who realized his pristine world was about to collapse.
