Chapter 5 - Threshold of Another Life

The doorbell chimed softly, a cheerful melody that felt grotesquely out of place given the agonizing weight of the moment.
David looked at me, his eyes shining with unshed tears. I nodded mutely, reaching out to take his hand. Together, we walked toward the front door as Detective Marcus pulled it open.
Sarah Thompson stood on the threshold. Her eyes swept past the detective and landed directly on us, then drifted down the hallway toward Lily’s closed bedroom door.
"Is she... is she here?" Sarah’s voice cracked, vibrating with a mixture of terror, disbelief, and a desperate, clawing hope that had sustained her through four years of absolute darkness.
"Yes, Mrs. Thompson," Detective Marcus said softly. "She is inside. She is safe, and she is healthy."
Sarah let out a sound that was half-sob, half-laugh, collapsing against her husband Mark, who wrapped his arms around her and buried his face in her hair. He looked up at us, his jaw tight, his eyes filled with an overwhelming tide of emotion.
"Can we... can we see her?" Mark asked, his voice thick with tears. "Please. We haven't seen her face in four years, except in old pictures."
"Come in," David said, stepping aside. His voice was steady, driven by an innate medical and human compassion, even as his own heart was breaking.
They stepped into our foyer. The contrast was agonizing. Here were the biological parents who had lost everything, standing in the home of the people who had unknowingly raised their child. There was no anger in their demeanor—only an exhausted, shell-shocked disbelief.
"My name is Jessica," I managed to say, my voice trembling. "And this is my husband, David."
Sarah looked at me, her eyes searching my face with an intense, penetrating gaze. She saw the tears on my cheeks, the way my hands were clutching my apron, and perhaps, she saw the genuine, fierce love I held for the little girl sleeping down the hall.
"You took care of her," Sarah whispered, stepping closer. "Didn't you?"
"With everything we had," David answered softly. "We didn't know. We swear to God, we never knew."
"We know," Mark said, his voice rugged. "The detectives told us everything this morning. You were victims of Vance's ring just like we were. You loved her. We can see it in this house. In her room."
Before any of us could speak further, a small, sleepy voice drifted down the hallway.
"Mommy? Daddy? Who is out there?"
The entire living room went deathly silent.
Footsteps padded softly against the hardwood floor. A moment later, Lily appeared around the corner, rubbing her eyes with the back of her small hand, her brown hair tousled from sleep, wearing her favorite dinosaur pajamas.
She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the strangers standing in our foyer.
Her eyes darted from Detective Marcus to Mark, then to Sarah, and finally settled on David and me.
"Mommy, what's happening?" Lily asked, her voice dropping into a hesitant whisper as she walked over and wrapped her arms around my leg, burying her face against my apron.
Sarah’s breath hitched. She covered her mouth with both hands, tears streaming freely down her cheeks as she took a slow, trembling step forward.
"Emma," Sarah whispered, her voice breaking on the name she hadn't dared to speak aloud in years.

Lily looked up from my leg, tilting her head in confusion.
"My name is Lily," she said politely, though there was a tremor of unease in her voice. "Who are they?"
