Chapter 4 - The Knock at Dawn

The digital alarm clock glowed red: 6:04 AM.

Before the birds had even started their morning chorus, a sharp, authoritative knock echoed against our front door.

David and I sat up simultaneously. We had been dozing lightly on top of the covers, fully dressed in yesterday’s clothes.

"I'll get it," David said, his voice raspy from lack of sleep.

He walked down the stairs with heavy steps. I followed closely behind, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

When David opened the door, Detective Marcus was standing on the porch, flanked by a younger female officer. They didn't look like they were delivering good news. Their faces were solemn, drained of color.

"May we come in?" Detective Marcus asked quietly.

David stepped aside, holding the door wide. We gathered in the living room, standing near the sofa where Lily’s favorite stuffed rabbit sat abandoned on the cushions.

"The expedited lab results came in an hour ago," Detective Marcus said, pulling a manila folder from his briefcase. He looked at us with profound sorrow. "It's a positive match. Lily Hale is Emma Thompson."

The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

I felt my knees buckle, and David reached out just in time, grabbing my waist to steady me. A sob tore through my throat, sharp and agonizing.

"Are you certain?" David asked, his voice shaking with a desperate, pathetic hope. "Is there any margin of error?"

"None," the detective said gently. "The DNA profile matches the biological parents' records with 99.999% accuracy. There is no doubt."

"Her parents..." I choked out, tears streaming down my face. "Do they know?"

"We contacted them at 4:00 AM," Detective Marcus said. "They are on their way here right now."

The words hung in the air like a death sentence. They are on their way here right now.

For four years, another mother and father had lived in a perpetual state of agony, grieving a daughter stolen from them by a corrupt adoption ring. And for those same four years, David and I had poured our entire souls into loving that exact same little girl, believing with every fiber of our being that she was ours by divine right.

"What about Lily?" David asked fiercely, stepping protectively in front of me. "She doesn't know them. She only knows us. If you take her away from us right now, it will traumatize her beyond repair."

"We are not going to storm in and rip her out of your home, Dr. Hale," Detective Marcus assured us, raising his hands in a calming gesture. "We are handling this with social services and child psychologists. But the biological parents have a legal right to know their child is safe, and the process of reunification must begin. A family court judge has already scheduled an emergency hearing for this afternoon."

Just as the detective finished speaking, the sound of tires crunching on our gravel driveway signaled the arrival of another vehicle.

We all turned toward the front window.

An unmarked police car and a dusty sedan pulled up to the curb. Two people stepped out of the sedan. A man with a worn, weather-beaten face and a woman wrapped in a heavy winter coat, despite the mild morning air. The woman’s eyes were red-rimmed and hollow, her hands trembling as she clutched a framed photograph tightly against her chest.

Sarah and Mark Thompson had arrived.
