Chapter 9 - Breaking the Shadow

The sudden plunge into darkness threw Julian’s mercenaries into momentary confusion. Their tactical night-vision goggles flared bright green as they scrambled to adjust to the electronic blackout.

What they didn't know was that Arthur’s bunker ran on an analog backup grid completely immune to digital EMPs, and the interior security lights were wired to respond instantly to manual overrides controlled from the central core.

“Now, Vance!” Arthur shouted into his radio.

The hallway lights flashed back to life at maximum, blinding intensity. For three agonizing seconds, the high-intensity halogen bulbs flooded the foyer with searing white light, overloading the optical sensors on the mercenaries' high-tech gear and leaving them completely disoriented.

From the upper balconies, Arthur’s security team deployed non-lethal flash-compression grenades, filling the air with disorienting sound and heavy smoke.

Amidst the blinding chaos, I slipped out from a hidden service alcove behind the grand staircase—a narrow maintenance shaft I had discovered while exploring the estate’s older stone architecture. Armed with a heavy pneumatic remote control linked to the building’s internal pneumatic doors, I aimed the transmitter at the heavy hydraulic bulkhead separating the foyer from the secure wing.

Clang!

The massive steel blast doors slammed shut with earth-shattering force, dividing Julian’s strike team right down the middle. Three mercenaries were trapped in the outer hall, while Julian and his top two commanders were isolated inside the main foyer, completely cut off from reinforcements.

Julian spun around, his smooth composure cracking for the very first time as he realized he had been outsmarted not by a tactical team, but by a child.

“You little rat,” Julian snarled, drawing a sleek sidearm from his shoulder holster and turning his aim toward the service alcove where I stood.

Before his finger could tighten on the trigger, a thunderous crack echoed through the foyer. Detective Vance’s service weapon barked once, striking the concrete floor just inches from Julian’s boots, sending a shower of sharp sparks flying into the air.

“Drop the weapon, Julian!” Vance roared, descending the grand staircase with his gun leveled squarely at Julian’s chest, flanked by Arthur and three armed guards. “The game is over. Every federal agency from here to Washington has your encrypted network logs. You’re entirely alone.”

Julian slowly lowered his gun, his eyes burning with suppressed rage as he looked around at the circle of armed men surrounding him. He realized there was no escape—the fortress had locked down tight, and the authorities were already tracking the automated distress signal Arthur had broadcast to federal dispatch the moment the gate alarms sounded.

“You think locking me away changes anything?” Julian hissed, his voice dripping with venom as handcuffs were snapped tightly around his wrists by Vance. “The bloodline remains flawed. They’ll never be safe.”

“They’re safe right here,” Arthur said coldly, stepping up beside me and placing a heavy, protective hand on my shoulder. “Because unlike you, Julian, they have a family that fights back.”
