Chapter 10 - Dawn Over Ironwood Ridge

The morning sun rose over the majestic peaks of Blackwood County, painting the snow-capped mountain range in brilliant shades of gold and amber. The sirens of federal law enforcement vehicles wailed softly as they wound their way up the private access road, coming to collect Julian and his remaining operatives, carting them off to a maximum-security federal penitentiary where they would never threaten our family again.
Inside the warm, sunlit nursery of Ironwood Ridge, the twins cooed softly in their cribs, healthy, safe, and surrounded by medical equipment that was no longer needed.
I sat in a comfortable rocking chair by the large bay window, watching the golden light spill across the valley below. My scraped feet had healed, the heavy calluses on my hands were turning into scars of survival, and the endless nightmares of the dark road had finally begun to fade.
Arthur walked into the nursery carrying a steaming mug of hot cocoa with extra marshmallows, handing it to me with a gentle, grandfatherly smile that made him look decades younger.
“You did good, kid,” Arthur said softly, leaning against the window frame and looking out at the endless horizon. “Your mother would have been prouder than words can say.”
“We made a promise,” I whispered, taking a warm sip of the cocoa. “We kept them safe.”
Detective Vance stepped into the room, holding a neatly folded copy of a brand-new birth certificate and official guardianship papers bearing our names, officially tying us to the Ironwood estate and legally securing our future.

“The authorities have cleared the property,” Vance announced with a warm grin. “From here on out, Ironwood Ridge is your home. No shadows, no running, no hiding.”
I looked down at the tiny hands of my baby brother and sister as they stretched out in their sleep, reaching peacefully toward the light. The long, terrifying nightmare that had started with an old squeaking wheelbarrow on a lonely country road was finally, truly over. And as I looked out at the bright, open world waiting for us beyond the mountains, I knew we were going to be just fine.
