Chapter 6 - An Unspoken Bond

Two weeks passed. Francesca’s recovery was miraculously fast, aided by the private room, the specialized organic meals delivered daily to her bedside, and the constant, cheerful visits from Leo.

She also had another constant visitor.

Adriano came every evening. He would sit in the armchair, listening to her talk about her nursing textbooks, occasionally offering dry, witty commentary that made her laugh. She learned that he was a "distributor" of various goods, though she wasn't naive. The silent, armed men who stood outside her door, the way the hospital staff bowed when he walked in, and the sheer power he radiated spoke of a much darker truth.

But around her and Leo, he was a different man. He was attentive, fiercely protective, and surprisingly gentle.

"You're discharged tomorrow," Adriano said one evening, watching her pack the few belongings she had.

"Yes," Francesca smiled, feeling a sudden pang of sadness. "Back to my quiet studio. Back to reality."

"Your studio is no longer your studio," Adriano said calmly.

Francesca stopped packing. "What do you mean?"

"The building was... unsafe," Adriano said, choosing his words carefully. "I have arranged for you to stay at my estate during your remaining recovery period. It has a full medical wing, private gardens, and Leo would be devastated if you left."

"Adriano, I can't live at your mansion," Francesca said, her face heating up. "It’s not appropriate. We... we barely know each other."

"We share a kidney, Francesca," Adriano pointed out, a rare, teasing glint in his dark eyes. "I think we are past the point of formal introductions." He stepped closer, his presence wrapping around her like a warm blanket. "My home is secure. You will have your own wing, absolute privacy, and all the time you need to study. Let me protect you."

Francesca looked into his eyes. She saw the sincerity there, but she also saw a deep, unspoken loneliness. He was a man surrounded by walls, and somehow, she had been allowed inside.

"Alright," she whispered. "Just until I'm fully recovered."

The Rossi estate was breathtaking. Nestled on a cliff overlooking the ocean, it was a fortress of stone, manicured lawns, and high iron gates. Francesca was given a beautiful, sun-drenched suite overlooking the rose gardens.

Over the next month, the estate felt less like a fortress and more like a home. Francesca spent her mornings studying, her afternoons playing in the garden with Leo, and her evenings dining with Adriano.

They talked for hours under the starlight. She told him about her mother’s love for baking; he told her about his dream of building a legitimate empire where his son would never have to look over his shoulder.

The attraction between them grew like a slow-burning fire. It was in the way his hand lingered on her lower back when he guided her through a door, the way his eyes softened whenever she entered the room, and the quiet, breathless moments they shared when Leo went to bed.

But the peace was not meant to last.
