Chapter 3 - Awakening of the Giant

The first thing Adriano Rossi felt was pain—a deep, tearing ache in his side that felt like a localized fire. The second thing he felt was the distinct, unmistakable scent of hospital bleach.
He forced his eyes open. The ceiling was white. Standard acoustic tiles. He tried to sit up, but a sharp, agonizing spasm in his abdomen forced him back down with a low groan.
"Don't move, boss."
The voice was low and familiar. Adriano turned his head slowly. Standing by the window was Marco, his secondary-in-command, and Silas, his personal bodyguard. Both men looked disheveled, their ties loosened, their hands instinctively hovering near their jackets.
"Where is... Leo?" Adriano’s voice was a dry, rasping scrape.
"He's safe, Adriano," Marco said, stepping forward. "He's downstairs in the cafeteria with Silas's brother. He's unharmed. Not a scratch on him."
Adriano let out a long, ragged breath, his tense shoulders relaxing slightly. "The ambush... the warehouse..."
"It was the Valetti family. They set a trap," Marco said, his face hardening. "They thought they could take you out while you were visiting the safehouse with the boy. We cleaned up the mess, but you took a bullet to the side. By the time we found you, you were gone. We thought..."
"I crawled," Adriano muttered, remembering the blinding pain, the cold rain, and the desperate drive back to his estate. "I made it home. But I passed out. I remember Leo crying."
"He saved you, boss," Marco said, a look of genuine disbelief on his face. "He called a local diner. Some late-night waitress answered. She didn't call the cops. She didn't call the ambulance. She drove to your house in a beat-up sedan, dragged your body into her backseat, and brought you here."
Adriano stared at his lieutenant. "A waitress?"
"Yeah. A nobody. Francesca Moretti. Works the graveyard shift at the Moonlight Diner." Marco rubbed the back of his neck. "But that's not all. Your kidney was shredded. The doctors said you were a goner. We were scrambling to find a donor within the syndicate, but we didn't have time. The waitress... she volunteered."
Adriano’s heart rate spiked, the monitor beside him beeping in rapid succession. "She did what?"
"She gave you her kidney, boss. She was a perfect match. They just finished the surgery a few hours ago. She's in the recovery wing right now."
Adriano lay in silence, his sharp, dark eyes staring at the ceiling. In his world, nothing was free. Everything carried a price, a hidden agenda, or a knife in the back. Kindness was a currency used by those who wanted something greater in return.
"Find out everything about her," Adriano commanded, his voice growing stronger, cold and calculating. "Her family, her debts, her past. Nobody gives a piece of their body to a stranger without a reason. Find out what she wants."
"We're already on it," Marco nodded. "But Adriano... she gave the hospital every cent she had in her pockets just to get you admitted. Forty-seven dollars. The doctors said she was saving it for nursing school."
May you like
Adriano’s eyes narrowed. A waitress with forty-seven dollars to her name had saved the life of the most feared syndicate head in the city.
"Keep a guard on her door," Adriano ordered. "Nobody touches her. And bring my son to me."
